BASIC: HNSITRUC TIONS WHAT ARE LINE DESIGNS? Line designs are geometric patterns formed entirely by the use of straight line segments ‘that produce the illusion of a curve. When firstseeing one of these designs you will have to Took closely to convince yourself that no curved lines are used. This interesting property pro- duces fascinating résults yet line designs are reiatively simple to do. HOW ARE THEY MADE? These line desions are formed by connecting certain sequences of points with line.seg: ments Different designs are formed by selecting points in various ways. The most common ‘way is to'connect equally-spaced points along the two sides of an angle as shown and described below. (1) Draw an angle with two sides of the same length. {2) Divide each side into an equal number of segments and mark them es shown ih figure 1. {3) Connect point A'with point:A, point B with point B, end so on as shown in’ figure 2 uritiLall of the points are connected. s " : : D of el 5 a ef cl el L 1 2 3 MAKING DESIGNS BY COMBINING ANGLES fariety of designs can be produced. Complete each By combining two or more angles a v angle using the basic line design technique. First create a line design by connecting each dot with the Sth dot and then continue that pattern. Then, do another one connecting each dot with the 7th or Sth dot, then try one with the 10th or 12th dot. What do you notice about the resulting line design in the middle? Finally, reat a line design by connecting each dot with every one ofthe other 23 dots by a line segment, Be accurate and you will be pleased with the result.
