INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN PROJECT

REPORT 3 - SEAN JUNKINS

EDIT700: PRINCIPLES OF INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF LEARNERS
With Achieve 3000, all assessment and evaluation occurs within the program itself. As
mentioned in previous reports, student success within the program is tracked as students
complete the activities included in a given Achieve article. Student success on these
articles triggers automatic progress monitoring as the program increases text complexity to
ensure on-going and differentiated challenge and rigor.

However, Understanding the unique characteristics of a diverse group of learners is still

essential when working with an adaptive digital program like Achieve 3000. Knowing
student interest is powerful in working with the program to best meet individual student
needs. Assigned articles can vary based upon student interests to help promote
engagement with the content as students work to improve their Lexile score.

With this being an Accelerated English/Language Arts class, students have already
demonstrated they are capable of reading above grade level. According to the official
Lexile-to-Grade Correspondence chart, the average 7th grader begins the year with a
Lexile score of 735. Of the 22 students in this Accelerated class, their average starting
Lexile for the 2015-2016 school year was a 965. Thus, the ability to read successfully has
already been demonstrated. For these students, the challenge comes in their ability to
apply knowledge and think critically within a given piece of text.

As included in Report 1, here are the starting Lexiles for the 22 students in this class:

SUMMATIVE
ASSESSMENTS TO MEASURE LEARNING

Prior to completing any articles and activities within the Achieve 3000 program, students
take a Lexile LevelSet assessment to determine their initial starting point lexile as they
being in the program.

Student success on articles triggers automatic assessment and progress monitoring within
the program as text complexity increases based on student success.

Student success is tracked in the Achieve 3000 program based upon the score on the
activity within each article. Student success and mastery is defined as follows:
MasteryisDemonstrated = Score of 80-100%
Student has demonstrated mastery of this standard, by responding correctly to
80%-100% of activity questions aligned to this standard. (
AdditionalPracticeRecommended = Score of 65-79%
Student has demonstrated the need for additional practice on this standard, by
responding correctly to 65%-79% of activity questions aligned to this standard.
AggressiveInterventionRecommended = Score of < 65%
Student has demonstrated the need for aggressive intervention on this standard, by
responding correctly to less than 65% of activity questions aligned to this standard.

EVALUATION MATERIALS
All assessment and evaluation tools occur inside the Achieve 3000 program. Achieve 3000
is a digital content resource provided by Horry County Schools to all middle school in the
district. This digital tool delivers differentiated instruction for nonfiction reading thats
precisely tailored to each students Lexile reading level. The Achieve3000 program
engages all learners at their individual reading levels and constantly challenges them to
improve their literacyskills.

Achieve 3000 steadily increase students' ability to read, comprehend, apply and
communicate information derived from complextext. Students take LevelSet, designed by
MetaMetrics, to establish a baseline Lexilelevel. Students receive differentiated, gradeappropriate, nonfiction passages, matched to their individual Lexilelevel.
Students complete regular assessments, aligned to grade-level standards, which measure
his ability to comprehend informationaltext. As students progress through the program,
their reading abilities are evaluated, and text rigor is increased when progress isdetected.

EVALUATION PROCESS
With Achieve 3000, students are consistently working to improve their Lexile score by
interacting with non-fiction reading passages designed to challenge their ability to
understand and interpret complex texts. Since Achieve 3000 is an adaptive software
program that directly addresses and meets individual needs.

Throughout this on-going and continuous evaluation process:

Students:
- Complete a LevelSet assessment to establish their initial Lexile score
- Complete three articles per week in the Achieve 3000 program

- Complete a before reading poll

- Read the article

- Complete each articles corresponding activity

The Achieve 3000 program:

- Provides non-fiction articles differentiated to individual students lexile levels
- Records student time on task and article completion in the program
- Adjusts student lexile levels and text complexity based on student performance on article
activities

The Teacher:
- Monitors student Lexile levels
- Provides additional opportunities, resources, and support to assist student Lexile growth
