STUDY NOTES BS 7671: Requirements for Electrical Installation IEE Regulations (16TH EDITION) CITB em IGE REGULATIONS, 16TH EDITION 5 Accessories, Diversity and Conventional Circuit Arrangements Accessories Plugs and Socket Outlets (553-01) Plugs and socket outlets are recognised as being suitable for electrical installations by the IEE Regulations for iow voltage cirouits (reference should be made to Table §54 of the IEE Regulations). Plugs and socket outlets for low voltage circuits; types, ratings and relevant British Standards are shown below. 5.15.20 amps BS $96 {Fuses to BS 1362) ST] 2.8.18. 30 amps 16,22, 63, 125 amps Bs 546 BS EN 60908-2 2 2} Fuses. ifany, to BS 646) These plug and socket outlets ase designed so that it is not possible to engage any pin of the piug into a live contact of a socket outlet whilst any other pin of the plug is exposed (not e requirement for SELV circuits) and the plugs are not capable of being inserted into sockets of systems other than their own. With the exception of SELV or special circults having characteristics where danger may arise, all socket outlats must be of the non-reversible type, with @ point for the connection of a protective conductor. 5 Conventional Circuit Arrangements {Reference Appendix 9 IEE On-Site Guide) ‘Types of final circuits using BS 1363 socket outlets and fused connection units are: + Radial circuits + Ring circuits Radial Circuits An unlimited number of socket outlets may be supplied,.but the floor areg which may be served by the socket outlets is limited fo either 20m* or 50 mi depending on the size and type of the cable used and size of overcurrent protection afforded 5/7 Ring Circuits The requirements for ring circults are:- An unlimited number of socket outlets may be provided, (Each ‘socket outlet of a twin or multiple socket to be regarded as one socket outlet). The floor area served by a single 304 ring circuit must not exceed 100 m* in domestic installations Consideration must be given to the loading of the circuit especially kitchens which may requira @ separate circuit ‘When more than one ring circuit is installed in the same premises, the socket outiets installed should be reasonably shared amongst the ring circuits so that the assessed load is balanced Cable sizes and overcurrent protaction are given below. Reterence should be made to Table 8A of the IEE On Site Guide. When socket outlets are wired from a fused spur the minimum size of conductor is: 1.5 mm? for rubber or PVC insutated cables with copper conductors. 2.5 mm*tor rubber or PVC insulated cables with copper clad aluminium conductors. ® sms Ring cieut, +O i oc Appliance 4 SA a fing cireut Appliance Ring circuit Apniiance Fan | | Lamp | | clock Ring ciruit Note Cable size for fused spur is dependent on the magnitude of the connecied load fT Method of Connecting Spurs to Circuit (a) at the terminal of accessories on the ring (©) at a joint Dox Ring Joint box oe = N 4 PoO= a: (b) ‘Spur ao (c) at the origin of the circuit in the distripution beard ¥ Ring ag o ‘Spur Oistribution board ard Typical Radial Cireults Using BS 1363 Socket Outlets Ee \ i O h i No, of socket outlets is unlimited but dependent ‘on loading of circuit ee] imp lz Ch K cee! Cooker Circuits A circuit supplying a cooking appliance must include a control switch or cooker control unit which may inciude a socket outlet. The rating of the circuit should bs determined by an assessment of the current demand in accordance with Table 14 of the {EE On Site Guide. Bg Appliances In a single room (476-03-04) ‘Where two or more appliances are installed in the same room - as is often the case when a fitted kitchen incorporates built-in cooker, hob, microwave oven, fridge and dishwasher - then one single means may be used to control ali tha appliances, 6.9. a series of double pole switches In one panet providing individual control for each appliance Final Clreults Using BS 196 Socket Outlets The circuit arrangements for BS 196 socket outlats which are generally instatied in industrial installations can be either Radial or Ring circuits, When assessing the current demand for such circuits (and after allowances for diversity) the maximum current must not exceed 324 which is the largest size of overcurrent device permitted. (Any permanently connected equipment which operates continuously should not have any aliowance for diversity). As the number of socket outlets permitted is unlimited, any spurs must be fused or protected by a circuit breaker of not more than 164 rating. Types of BS 196 Plugs and Sockets For circuits with one pole earthed the socket outlel usad should be of the type that will accept 2 pole anc earth contact plugs, with fusing on the live pole only: the socket should be of the type having raised socket keys and socket keyways fecessed at position 8. If the circuit has neither pole earthed (such as a circult supplied from double wound transformer having the mid point of its secondary winding earthed) the socket autiet must be of the type which will accept 2 pole and earth plugs with double pola fusing. The socket outlets should have raised socket keys, and socket keyway recessed at position P. / Beeston of keyway / # Peposition of keyway 'P* Conductor Size The conductor size is determined by appiying the correction factors in Appendix 9 of the IEE On Site Guide. 54 Ring circuits - not less than 0.87 times the rating of the protective davica. Radial circuits - not less than the rating of the overcurrent device. Tha 324, 63A and 125A rating sockets must be wired on radial circuits oach supplying one socket outiet only but the 16A type can be wired in unlimited numbers on radial circuits where the estimated loac and diversity permits. ‘The maximum size of overcurrent device for a 8S EN 60309-2 multiple 164 socket outlet radial circult is 20A. ‘Tne size of conductor is determined by applying the correction factors from Appendix 4 of the 16th Edition IEE Regulations so that the conductor does not have current carrying capacity less than the rating of the overcurrent protective device, 6S BS EN 60309-2 Socket Outtet Circuits ‘One 324 socket outlet 634 One 834 socket outiat 1254, (One 125A socket outlet OOOO Unfimited number of 16A socket outlets where. ‘estimated load and diversity permits Extra care must be taken to connect the correct cable conductors to the correct socket outlet terminals.
