SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY — sri — SCHOOL OF NURSING P 3149778900 F 387798 Te 9779779950 nursingstueds worwstued November 1, 2016 ‘To Whom It May Concern: Ihave served as a faculty mentor for Lindsey Joyce as she completes the CUTS. program. | have known Lindsey since Fall 2015 when she began working in the ‘School of Nursing Simulation Lab. Besides serving as her mentor for CUTS | have worked side by side with Lindsey and have been able to observe her teaching skills first hand, as well as serve as an informal mentor in the simulation lab. Lindsey and I had four separate formal mentoring meetings. Because we worked together in the simulation lab we also had many informal discussions. She often came to me for advice and would approach me about ideas for simulation. Serving as a mentor and a colleague provided a comfortable environment to bounce ideas off of each other. At our first formal meeting we met to discuss the CUTS program, her responsibilities and my mentoring responsibilities. We set up a tentative time line for future meetings and discussed the activities that Lindsey planned to attend. | suggested that she videotape a simulation debriefing session since she would be working as a GA in the simulation lab during the summer and fall. During our second meeting we discussed her teaching philosophy. Lindsey came with 2 well thought out philosophy that she had developed in one of her nursing masters educational courses. We talked about how one’s teaching philosophy can change over time and with experience. As she progressed through the CUTS program her own teaching philosophy evolved and she made changes to her written philosophy. Meetings three and four were spent reviewing the video feedback and portfolio. | found these meetings very valuable as they offered a good opportunity to review what Lindsey had accomplished thus far in the CUTS program. As humbling as it can be, | felt that the video review and discussion were great ‘opportunities for Lindsey to reflect on her own teaching methods and openly discuss them with someone. She is very open minded to feedback and is eager to improve her teaching skills. Regarding the portfolio, Lindsey was eager to take on the task of creating an online portfolio despite limited experience in this area. She did a great job of developing an intuitive website that displays her accomplishments and reflections. Higher purpose. Greater good. especially enjoyed discussing and reviewing Lindsey's proposed course and learning activities. As an experienced OR nurse she was able to develop a mock elective course that would be quite valuable to new nursing grads interested in peri-operative nursing. Her enthusiasm for peri-operative nursing was quite ‘obvious in our discussions and her development of the course. Lindsey demonstrated increased confidence in her teaching skills as she completed the CUTS program. She also verbalized the value of the program and what she has learned. She is deserving of the CUTS certificate. | was honored to. be her mentor. | wish her much success in her future teaching endeavors.
