Newspaper Layout.

Corporate media show a clear tendency towards a magazine-like and relaxed

layout. Cut-out pictures, infographics and dynamic photographic cuts are essential
ingredients.

Documentary Black and White. "1", the corporate media by ArcelorMittal, is

issued in black and white in some countries, for example in Poland. This is not only
less expensive, but also creates a documentary, matter -of-fact impression.
Corporate Layout. Worldwide, publications by ArcelorMittal are of one and the same
design, which is achieved through
- the same newspaper format
- the font VAG Rounded for headlines
- a six-column page make-up
- rounded edges with pictures and text spaces at the bottom of the pages.

Inside Page I. Coloured headlines, spacious leads and a horizontal division by

orange-coloured bars are markers of "1".

Inside Page II. Although originating in the seventies the typeface VAG
Rounded and the colour orange are not indicative of an outdated design: In
combination with their use of photographic cut and sizes the publication still has a
modern appeal.

Infographics Plus Text. The double page of "BASF information" on the

topic "60 years of Federal Republic of Germany" serves as a good example of how to
combine infographics and long text blocks. At the bottom there are two service

boxes: the one on the left provides a survey of BASF logos in 60 years and the one
on the right contains infographics on the development in turnover since 1949.

Variable Column. Although variable, the layout of "BASF information"

follows clear rules: Short articles are placed on the left or on the right margin and a
small variable column is used to structure the page. Service boxes are added to the
lead story .

Clear Visualization. The newspaper "Team" by RWE provides for an eyecatching motif with the stacks of envelopes and is, therefore, a perfect illustration of
their topic "1.5 million letters".

A Textbook Example. The basic rules for page layout are followed with
painstaking care in "update" by Vodafone. Their house colour red puts emphasis on
the service box under the photo.

Variable Column Width. In "Provinzial-Info" the number of columns vary

between four and six. Long articles, for instance, cover four columns for better
readability .

Basic Rules of Newspaper Layout

1 Each page contains a lead article with the biggest headline and photo.
2 Newsflashes are clustered in blocks on the right or left margin or, less often, at the
bottom of the page.
3 Facts and figures and other additional information are gathered in service boxes.
