Lesson 6 - Using and Evaluating

Instructional Materials
Lesson 6 - Using and Evaluating Instructional Materials

Summary :

One of the instructional materials used to attain instructional objectives is the Field Trip.
To ensure effective use of instructional materials, Hayden Smith and Thomas Nagel (1972)
book authors on Instructional Media, advise us to abide by the acronym PPPF which stands for
Prepare Yourself, Prepare your Students, Present the Materials, and Follow up.

Reflection :

As a future educator, the chapter which is entitled Using and Evaluating Instructional
Materials is very useful. The information given in there was very helpful for the teachers in the
near future. The instructional materials that some of the schools are using nowadays can also be
used in the learning process. For the proper selection of instructional materials, there are
following guide questions for it and some of those are stated in this chapter. With this, I have
learned that it is not that easy to select materials for learning and you cant just pick randomly
without guidelines and considerations. As of the proper usage of materials, Hayden Smith and
Thomas Nagel (1972) advise us to abide the acronym PPPF for an effective use of instructional
materials. The PPPF stands for Prepare Yourself, Prepare you Students, Present the Materials ,
and Follow up.

1. It is one of the instructional materials used to attain instructional objectives.

2. Who are the book authors on Instructional Media that advise us to abide by the acronym
PPPF?
3.

What does the PPPF stands for?

4.

Lesson 7 - Direct, Purposeful

Experience and Beyond
Lesson 7 - Direct, Purposeful Experience and Beyond

Summary :

Direct, purposeful experiences are our concrete and firsthand experiences that make up
the foundation of our learning. These are rich experiences that our senses bring from
which we construct the ideas, the concepts, the generalizations that give meaning and
order to our lives. (Dale 1969). They are sensory experiences.

Indirect experiences are experiences of other people that we observe, read or hear about.
These are not firsthand but rather vicarious experiences.

Direct experience serves as the foundation of concept formation, generalization and

abstraction.

Reflection :
The chapter 7 is entitled Direct, Purposeful Experience and Beyond. Direct purposeful
experience was already discussed in chapter 5, The Cone of Experience, but in this chapter, it
is more focused. As we know, direct purposeful experience is our concrete and firsthand
experiences that make up the foundation of learning. In here, weve known different kinds of
experiences of my classmates and these experience taught them well about life. As the famous
quotations says Experience is the best teacher.

Lesson 8 Teaching with Contrived Experiences
Summary :

Contrived experience are edited copies of reality and are used as substitutes for real things
when it is not practical or possible to bring or do the real thing in the classroom.
The atom, planetarium are classified as models. Models is a reproduction of a real thing in a
small scale, or large scale, or exact size but made of synthetic materials.
A mock up is an arrangement of real device or associated devices, displayed in such a way that
representation of reality is created. It is also a special model where the parts of the model are
singled out, heightened and magnified in order to focus on that part or process under study.
The preserved specimens fall under specimen and objects.
A specimen is any individual or item considered typical of a group, class or whole.
Objects may also include artifacts displayed in museum or objects displayed in exhibits or
preserved insect specimens in science.
Simulation is a representation of a manageable real event in which the learner is an active
participant engage in learning behavior or in applying previously acquired skills of knowledge.
Games are played to win while simulations need to have a winner.
Reflection :
Contrived experiences, defined by this chapter, are edited copies of reality and are used
as substitute for real thing when it is not practical or not possible to bring or do the real thing in
the classroom. This was also discussed already in the previous chapter, but in here it is broader.
I have learned that experiences have different kinds which are models, mock ups, specimen,
objects, simulation and games. These contrived experiences can help us in better understanding
of something than just telling its description.

Lesson 9 -Teaching with Dramatized

Experience
Lesson 9 Teaching with Dramatized Experience
Summary :

Dramatic entrance is something that catches and holds our attention and has an emotional
impact.
Dramatized experiences can range from the formal play, pageants to less formal tableau,
pantomime, puppets and role playing.
Plays depict life, character, or culture or a combination of all three.
Pageants are usually community dramas that are based on local history, presented by local
actors.

Pantomime and tableaux, when compared to a play and a pageant, are less demanding in terms
of labor, time and preparation.
Pantomime is the art of conveying a story through bodily movements only.
Tableau (a French word which means picture) is a picture-like scene composed of people
against a background.
Puppets can present ideas with extreme simplicity without elaborate scenery or costume yet
effectively.
Types of puppets are (1) shadow puppets flat black silhouette made from light weight
cardboard and shown behind a screen, (2) rod puppets flat cut out figures tacked to a stick
with one or more movable parts, (3) hand puppets the puppets head is operated by the
forefinger of the puppeteer, (4) glove-and-finger puppets make use of old gloves to which
small costumed figures are attached, (5) marionettes flexible, jointed puppets operated by
strings or wires.
Role playing is an unrehearsed, unprepared and a spontaneous dramatization of a lets
pretend situation where assigned participants are absorbed by their own roles in the situation
described by the teachers.
Reflection :
I find this chapter exciting because I like dramas and plays. The Lesson 9 is entitled
Teaching with Dramatized Experience which includes play, pageants to less formal tableau,
pantomime, puppets and role playing. This helped me to know the difference of plays and roleplaying. Without this chapter, I may think that plays and role-playing are completely the same.
The introduction of puppets are also interesting because I have known the different kinds. The
dramatic experience can also help the learners cope up with their studies because by using those
instructional materials can help them to be motivated and interested.

Lesson 10 Demonstration in Teaching

Lesson 10 Demonstration in Teaching

Summary :

In demonstration, there is an audience, a process of speaking, and a process of showing

product or a method or proofs to convince the audience.

In Websters International Dictionary defines demonstration as a public showing and

emphasizing of the salient merits, utility, efficiency, etc, of an article or product.

Edgar Dale (1969) sited three guiding principles we must observe in using
demonstration as a teaching-learning experience, (1) Establish rapport, (2) Avoid the
COIK (Clear Only If Known) fallacy, (3) Watch for key points.

Reflection:

As I have read this chapter which is the Demonstrations in Teaching, demonstration

can be a process of speaking, a teacher that is asked to do a demonstration in teaching and a
process of showing product or a method or proofs to convince the audience. A demonstration
should always have an audience and as what I have said earlier that this includes the
demonstration of teaching for future teachers, thats why it is very helpful for the education
students like to know the guiding principles, planning and preparing for demonstrations. Im
glad that it was already written here and it is no longer too hard for me to practice.
