The BBFC main objective is to rate films determined by factors that are involved within the

movie. Issues/factors include; discrimination, drugs, horror, language, imitable behaviour,

nudity, sex, sexual violence, theme and violence when making decisions. They also consider
context, the tone and impact of a work (eg how it makes the audience feel) and even the
release format (for example, as DVDs are watched in the home, there is a higher risk of
underage viewing).
A U film is aimed for children aged 4 or above and are
suitable for everyone.
It is illegal for these films to have drugs or drug
references. Discrimination, imitable behaviour and
threatening themes are limited or, most likely, isnt
shown at all!
Interestingly violence is allowed if its slapstick and mild
with no serious harm. Nudity is only allowed with no
sexual reference and sex is only limited to kissing.

This is the gap between young children and teenagers.

Young children can see these films accompanied by
adults.
Discrimination is allowed in terms of historical or
educational context. Drugs must be used in terms of a
anti-drug message. Imitable behaviour is allowed if it
isnt realistic. Mild bad language can be used as well as
sexual innuendos, however, threat and violence must
not be prolonged.
Unsuitable for children under twelve unless supervised.
Discrimination is allowed in terms of historical or
educational context but if it isnt used in these contexts
then it is allowed but only if it is looked down upon.
Drugs shouldnt be glamorized in these films, this is the
same for imitable behaviour where that shouldnt be
realistic. Moderate strong language can be used and
nudity in a sexual portrayal must be discreet, sex itself must be moderate and discreet.
Physiological and physical threat is allowed as long as it isnt frequent. Violence must not
dwell on detail and can occasionally shown blood and
gore but not too graphic.
Unsuitable for anyone under 15.
The work itself shouldnt be discriminative but can
include racism, homophobia and other variation of
discrimination as well as language. Drugs can be shown
but not endorsed. Dangerous behaviour like self harm
and suicide must not be dwelled upon but can happen.
Very strong language is permitted, depending on the
manner. Nudity can be shown in a sexual way but

without strong detail, this works the same way with sex, it can be shown and other activities
but not in strong detail. Violence can be strong and
sexual violence is allowed.
No one under 18 can see these films, adults can choose
their own entertainment.
Almost everything is allowed in an 18 as long as it
doesnt breach criminal law. One of the key aspect is
sex, in an ordinary film it can be quite strong but not real
(unless its an R18) Violence can be sadistic and and
extremely graphic and language can be very strong.
Reality films and documentaries are usually in this
category due to being real.
