I am who I am, the memories dont

matter
Sir, theres been a terrible accident..
With great effort, I pushed my eyelids open, only to find myself in a white
room. Im wearing a hospital gown. There are people around me. I see fear
and disgust in their eyes.
At my bedside table, theres a little red box, empty. Its lined with
velvet, with a horizontal slit in the middle. How did I end up here? When they
put a mirror in front of me, I was startled at first; the face looking back was
unfamiliar to me. Who am I?
They took me to court. Ive never seen so many unknown faces at once.
They sat me on a bench, and thats when I heard what happened.
It seems my name is Ted. And I have a girlfirend. Well, Ted used to.
They have been together for ages, and Ted took her out to dinner one
evening.
A man is now showing the little red box to everyone in the courthouse.
Naturally, she said yes, so they celebrated with a few drinks.
The man puts the box in front of me. Ive never seen it before.
The rest of that evening went by in a flash: drinks, food, car, two bright lights
and a loud horn.
The 16 ton truck crumpled the passengers side. There was nothing the
paramedics could do.
The verdict was unanimous. Ted is guilty. It all became a haze of
images afterwards, handcuffs, prison gate, cell door opening..
Did you love her?, my cellmate asked, one morning.
I didnt know what to say.
