Obituary: New York Times Bestselling Author Gillian Flynn Dies

Author of Gone Girl and New York Times Bestseller, Gillian Flynn died March 7 at
her familys home in Chicago. Flynn was 45 and her cause of death is unknown.
Living by her own advice to write first, blush later, Flynn wrote four novels in her
lifetime. The books she wrote are all psychological thrillers in which Flynn packs
emotional dysfunction, brutal killings, self-harm, foul language and explicit sex, as
noted in an interview with The Telegraph.
Critically acclaimed author Stephen King said, Gillian Flynn is the real deal a
sharp, acerbic, and compelling storyteller with a knack for the macabre.
Flynn is best known for third novel Gone Girl, which sold more than 7 million
copies in 28 countries, and was adapted to the silver screen in 2013 starring Ben Affleck
and Rosamund Pike.
Flynns first novel, Sharp Objects, was published in 2006 and won two of Britains
Dagger awards. Her second novel, Dark Places, was released in 2009 and went on to
top a multitude of different book charts. It was a New York Times bestseller, Publishers
Weeklys best book of 2009, and Chicago Tribunes favorite fiction choice, just to name a
few.
Her novel Dark Places was also adapted in 2015 and stars Charlize Theron, while
Sharp Objects is currently in production. Unlike her other novels, it will be adapted for
television.
Flynn was born in Kansas City, Missouri to two community college professors. Her
mother, Judith Ann, taught reading comprehension and her father, Edwin Matthew Flynn,

was a film professor. She was raised surrounded by books and movies, which left an
impact on her life.
Flynn decided to attend the University of Kansas for her bachelors degree, and
Northwestern University for her masters degree. She studied journalism at both schools,
which led her to a position at Entertainment Weekly as a television critic before she
became a full-time author.
In 2007, Flynn met her husband, Brett Nolan. They have two children together. The
family resides in Chicago, Illinois.
She is survived by her two children and her husband.
