ProjectCharter:FlightManagementSystemforKopfAirlines

Background
AlphaAviationDesign(AAD)hasjustreleasedapressissuesayingthattheyarestartinganelectricallypowered
aircraftfor10passengersthatcandoshorthopflights.Partoftheprojectisthedesign,development,
implementation,testingandintegrationofanewFlightManagementSystemthatautomatesawidevarietyof
inflighttasksanddecreasetheworkloadofthepilots.Aselectricallypoweredaircraftshaveneverbeenfullycertified,
thisprojectisconsideredtobethepilotprojectforAADforfutureproductdevelopmentofsystemsandsubsystems.
ThisprojectwillalsoformanedificeforastrategicrelationshipbetweenAADandKopfAirlines.Thisprojectwillmake
surethatfutureprojectsinavionicssystemfromKopfAirlineswillbeautomaticallygiventoAAD.

ProjectObjectives

Determinepositionoftheaircraft

The mapon the cockpitdisplay shalldisplaytheposition


of the aircraft to the pilots with a + sign. In the event
that this function is not available then the + signshall
disappear and on the top right corner of the display a
FAILmessageshallappear.

Maintain altitude and velocity profile during


flight based on the flight plan that has been
enteredatthebeginningoftheflight.

Tha should value and the current value ofthealtitude


and velocity of the aircraft required in accordance with
the flight plan. The errors in altitude, attitude of the
aircraft and also the velocities shall be loaded in the
FMS. The difference in the stored values of where the
aircraft should be as compared to where it is shall be
displayedon the FMSdisplay at all times to the pilots.If
theaircraftiswithinbounds,thevaluesshallbe displayed
ingreen.

The training and development of the


engineers in the team as Certification and
VerificationEngineers(CVEs)

Trainingcourses run over 4daysduringaweekfromthe


independent safety authority. At the end an exam shall
be given by the engineers to see whether they have a
basic knowledge of the basic certification standards.
During the 4 months of the project, the safety authority
shall independentlymonitored. At the end ofthe project,
if the safety authority is satisfied,theengineersshallbe
giventhetitleofCVEwithcertificates.

Database of Airports as a function of the


currentlocationoftheaircraft

When the menu forairports arechosen, automatically a


listofairports,where the aircraftcanland,willbe loaded
in ascending orderof distanceofthelandingstripsfrom
the aircraft. The closest airport will be at the top of the
list.

When the navigation sensors connected to


the FMS have a failure, the pilot shall be
notifiedofthisfailure.

In the event that the sensors that are connected to the


FMS have a failure, then the following signals shall be
seenand/orheardinthecockpit:
audio warningand awarning screen ontheFMS ifthe
velocitymeasurementsarefalse.
continued tone in the form of master alarm if the
autopilotsareturnedoffduetofaultyreadings
attitude sensor failures would cause a bleep sound
and would a redmarker would appear on severalofthe
cockpitdisplays.

Scope
Thisprojectwilltackletheproblemofdesigning,developing,testingandintegratingaflightmanagementsystemfor
KopfAirlines.Theproductwillberolledoutintwophases:(i)prototypeand(ii)systemdelivery.

TheinterfacelimitationsareoutlinedintheInterfaceControlDocument(ICD)
andalsotheHardwareInterfaceDefinition(HID).Thesedocumentsoutlinethe
numberofsystemsthatareallowedtobeconnectedtotheFMS,theformatof
thedatabeitRs232orARINC429(andasaresultthecodinglimitations)

Theaircraftlevelsafetyanalysisandrequirementshavebeenwrittenand
approved
ThetemplatesforthedocumentationrequiredattheFMSSystemlevelhas
beendeliveredtotheteam
Thesystemshallbedesignedanddevelopedinhouseasthebudgetdoes
notallowforCommercialofftheShelf(COTS)purchases.
ThePlanningdocumentshavebeenwrittenforFMSatasystem,hardware
andsoftwarelevel.Thisincludesthefollowingdocuments:(i)configuration
managementplan(ii)processassuranceplan(iii)qualitymanagementplan
(iv)problemanddefectmanagement(v)HardwareDesignandCoding
Guidelines.

HighLevelRisks

Thereisnosetcertificationstandardsfordevelopmentofaflight
managementsystemforanelectricallypoweredaircraft.
Conflictbetweentheengineeringteamandthecertificationteamintermsof
processandimplementationprocesses.
Thereisariskoftheprojectnotbeingcompletedontimeifthereareany
changerequestsmadethatrequireconsiderablechangetothehardware
and/orsoftware.
Misunderstandingthecertificationrequirementsatanaircraftlevelthatfilter
totheFMSlevelwhichmaythreatentodelaythedeadlineimposedonthe
system.
LackofCommunicationbetweenthedesignandthetestteam.Thismaylead
todelayinthetestcampaign.
Lackofcertificationtrainingfortheengineers,whichwillcompromiseoneof
thehighlevelrequirementsoutlinedinthisprojectcharter.
