My unit is on the topic of fables. Fables is a very broad topic that
encompasses many stories that have taught many people many morals and lessons. While they may seem like a small part of a Language Arts education, they carry far more weight than what appears on the surface. A big question in this unit is why? Why fables? What relevance do they have? Why fables over any other story? These are all legitimate questions and questions that deserve legitimate answers. My answer to these questions lies in their significance in teaching different lessons and morals. Fables are different than other stories because of their potential to teach and impact lives. There is something special about a story that has the ability to impact lives beyond just teaching literacy. This gives the stories more leverage as they can impact lives outside of just the school setting. Fables are also unique in their length. Fables being short stories will not be an intimidating read for second graders. This will help keep students motivation and interest remain high, as the feeling of accomplishment you get when you finish a story will come very frequently.
Fables connection to the ELA Common Core curriculum, their
ability to impact lives, teach lessons, and their unique way to portray the parts of a story is what makes this unit unique and critical to the second grade education.
