Reflection Paper #1 Does Bae Respect My Boundaries?

On October 19, 2016, a Student Success Event called Does Bae Respect My
Boundaries was held at the Academic Classroom Building, room 101. When I arrived, there was
already a large amount of people gathered, waiting for the presentation to start. Once it did
however, a female host (whose name I didnt hear) welcomed everyone and introduced a panel of
commentators: Lindsey, Nick, Briana, and Sammy (note: this is how I heard their names.) The
presentation first talked about what it means to be in a healthy relationship vs an unhealthy one.
From there, the host established the link between this event and the 7 successful habits for
college students; habits 4 (Think Win-Win) and 5 (Seek First to Understand, Then to be
Understood) were the focus of this presentation.
Now comes the interactive portion of this event. On the large screen above, different
relationship scenarios are depicted. After the host finishes reading through each one, audience
members would raise their hands and share their thoughts on the matter. Examples of such
scenarios include an individual named Jordan, who wanted to engage in sexual activities with
their significant other, but the latter individual didnt feel ready at the last minute. As such,
Jordan decided to respect her boundaries. Another scenario revolved around a girl named Mysti
being abusive toward her boyfriend Devon due to him arriving later to her dorm than usual. The
panel of speakers would also share their thoughts on each scenario and speak on whether it was
healthy or not, while linking back to habits 4 and 5. Takeaways that I thought was important
from these discussions were the emphasis on how a persons body and facial expression could
influence the duration of events, as well as how certain cues could trigger events or memories in

people and how to overcome those triggers. After the presentation was over, pizza and
refreshments were served.
