Rural society and Industrialisation

It is of utmost importance that we understand the grievances of the people whose daily
lifestyle , culture and various practices that they perform are affected drastically . We have to
realise that it is really important to actually get there opinions as it is them who have to adjust
to the new conditions or are displaced from there natural surroundings .
There views are very important and should be considered as such biased decisions in favour
of industrialisation has also led to many violent uprisings against the government . Such
uprisings create a vacuum in the society , as the upper sections believe that the people from
the poor rural society are creating hindrances and obstacles in the process of industrialisation
which will lead to prosperity . Whereas the people from the lower strata or rural society inturn view the upper section of the society as mean and cruel .
Thus the basis of my article is the posco steel plant which had sometime back created a huge
uproar in the country . POSCO steel plant was an initiative of a South Korean multinational
which apne into existence after a memorandum of understanding . The project wanted to set
up a massive steel plant in the Jagatsinghpur district of Odisha . But the major problem with
the project was that it was in a very backward area the major population of the area was that
of adivasis , who felt alienated from the project .
Also what accompanied the feeling of alienation was the fear of displacement from their
native home , which meant drastic change in their lifestyles. After uprooting the natives there
was also no proper palms made by the government to rehabilitate the natives and provide
them with a living. Thus this showed, that the decision of the government which resulted in
such an upheaval had not payed heed to the demands of the locals . The anger against the
government was profound amongst the locals as there demands were not heard by the
government and thus the people felt ignored.
This led to great resentment amongst the people and led to widespread protests against the
government which sometimes also took the path of violence. The ripples of the government's
decision are still being felt in the area around Jagatsinghpur and the surrounding states.
Naxalism has gained prominence in the area and has become the prime form of protests in the
area. With the younger generation indulging in violence has further dampened the situation as
the young people have lost faith in the constitutional machinery of the country.
Hence we arrive at a conclusion that the people who are affected by the decision of the
government should have some say in such a situation where there is mass displacement of
people because the nature of this form of decision making is also not democratic. This also
has a huge impact on the people belonging to backward communities as they feel deprived

and this angers them, which leads them to do something that harms the entire society.
However the other side i.e. the richer section believed that the project was of great
importance to the country and would have boosted foreign direct investment in the country
and also provided a lot of job opportunities to the people of our country benefitting the
economy of our country drastically.
Thus there is a flip side to nearly everything in our society , because the wants and goals of
the people are very different and they also have different opinions which are dependent on
their desires and expectations. Thus one's gain will always be the others loss in nearly every
situation.
