Chapter 1: Introduction To Physics

By the end of the lesson, you are success if you

can:
explain what base quantities and derived
quantities are,
express quantities using prefixes,
express quantities in using scientific notation,
solve problems involving conversion of unit

Base quantities:
Quantities that cannot be defined in terms of other base quantities

Base Quantity Symbol

Length
Mass

Question: What is physical quantities?

Derived quantity
Obtained by combining base quantities by division, multiplication or
both

Example:

Derived quantity

Example:
Volume = Length x Breath x Height = m3
Density = Mass Volume = kg m-3
Velocity = Displacement Time = m s-1
Acceleration = Velocity Time = m s-2
Force = Mass x Acceleration = kg m s-2

Standard form
(Scientific Notation)
Q x 10n
where 1 Q < 10 and n is an integer
Examples:

0.000000696 m = 6.96 x 10-7 m

911 000 000 kg = 9.11 x 108 kg

Conversation of Unit

Example 1:
The frequency of the radio wave is 350M Hz. What is
the frequency of the radio wave in Hz?
Answer:
Mega (M) = 1,000,000 or 106
Therefore,
350MHz = 350 x 106 Hz
= 3.5 x 108 Hz

Conversation of Unit

Question 1: The thickness of a film is 25nm.

What is the thickness in unit meter?
Question 2: 0.255 s is equal to how many ms?
