Veterans Day November 11th 2016

What is a Veteran:
Each year I send out discounts and or updates to local events but I wanted to spend a little time defining a Veteran
and the Oath of Enlistment. Over the last few years Veterans who have served in either the Vietnam Era and or the
late 70s -80s (Cold War Era) have not defined themselves as Veterans because they have either not felt they were
due to not having served in combat and or not being treated equally by their own government when returning from
War such as the. There are many reasons why a Veteran will feel they are not therefore I wanted to share with you
the legal definition of the Veteran so that if you run into a Veteran who served in the military who feels they are not,
you can thank them for their service and acknowledge their service.
Legal Definition of a Veteran:
Title 38 of the Code of Federal Regulations defines a Veteran as a person who served in the active military, naval,
or air service and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. This definition explains
that any individual that completed a service for any branch of armed forces classifies as a Veteran as long as they
were not dishonorably discharged. However, with regard to applicable benefits, other considerations are important
and will be covered in later sections.
Oath of Enlistment:
"I, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign
and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of
the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of
Military Justice. So help me God."
Veterans take on many responsibilities to serving their country, not just having protected your freedoms and liberties
at home but also taking on several different tasks, specialties and jobs within each branch of the military. They start
off by taking the Oath Of Enlistment. This is the initial beginning of a volunteer choosing to serve in the military. I
can say most if not all will do much, much more but the oath of enlistment begins the process to serve. Many go to
wars, some do not however all prior service members are Veterans, there is not a difference. If you want to go into
semantics...a Combat Veteran served in Combat and a Non Combat Veteran did not...A Disabled Veteran is a Service Connected Disabled Veteran meaning they incurred injuries while serving in the military no matter combat or
not.
Please take the time to thank those around you for their service and help those that do not recognize themselves as
Veterans that they have and their services is much appreciated. Remember to take the time in the remembrance of
those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Also take time to sit at a local event recognizing Veterans in your community such as a high school, elementary school or attend a local Veterans Memorial Dedication. There are many
things going on this year, be apart of something great and remember to thank those near you for their service.
Have a Wonderful Veterans Day
