Civil War Newspaper Project

You will create 2 newspaper articles that will report

of the Civil War era. You will be reporting as if the
paper is written in the 1860s. The information will
be in newspaper format. You will choose which
regional area, North or South, which you will be
reporting from. You will need to do research,
utilizing your textbook and internet resources.
Each newspaper will include the following items:
A. A title This will be effected by the region that
you choose (both articles should be from the
same perspective as if from one newspaper)
B. 2 newspaper articles- Each should be at least 1
full page in length (at least 2-3 paragraphs) and
should use language/jargon of each region. For
example, some battles have a different name
depending on whether it was from the Union
perspective or Confederate perspective. Also
Union soldiers may refer to the Confederate

soldiers as rebels. Confederate soldiers may

refer to the Union soldiers as Yankees.
C. Each article should include one picture with a
caption, just like you would see in any
newspaper. The caption should reflect what is in
the picture. The picture must make sense with
the article you were writing.
D.Should be set up to look like a newspaper article
with a Newspaper title and an article title.
Written in columns.
Articles can be done in a few different ways. You
can do a story on a specific battle or event during
the Civil War. You can do a story on a famous
person from the Civil War era. You can do an
editorial approach on an issue such as slavery or
Lincolns election (different people from different
regions will have a different view). I have provided
a list of some ideas to help get you started, if you
think of another idea you can come talk to me. You
will have to do research. On an additional paper I
would like you to record what sources you have
used. Wikipedia is NOT an acceptable source.

Goal Sheet/Participation
To help keep you organized and on task, I have provided a goal for each day
that we are in the lab. You MUST have myself, Ms. Barnes, or Ms. Boyle (if
you are in 4/5) initial each goal to receive participation points for the day.
This is a good way to yourself on target and to really utilize the limited time
we have in the computer lab. You cannot move on until you get your initials.
Just because you received your initials for the day does not mean you are
done. Move onto your next goal. The better you utilize your time in the lab
the less you will need to do outside of class.

________

Day 1 (Thursday 10/15): Have two topics chosen for your

newspaper articles. You may utilize the ideas sheet provided. If you
have an alternative idea it must be approved by me. Also, you must
be able to tell me if you are planning on doing your project from a
Northern or Southern view.

________

Day 2 (Friday 10/16): You must have at least 3 sources that

you plan to use for this project. One can be your textbook the other
two must be reliable websites or books. Wikipedia is NOT a reliable
source.

________

Day 3 (Monday 10/19): This is our last day in the lab. Many of
you, will hopefully have gotten a good start. On this last day, I
would like to see that you have at least 1 paragraph completed and
1 picture chosen for one of your articles.

Please dont lose this sheet so that I may give you the proper participation
points. If you are afraid you will lose it you may leave it with me at the end of
class. You are still responsible for getting your initials.
