To Kill A Mockingbird Signpost Journal

Journal #1
SIGNPOST: WORDS OF THE WISER- Words of the wiser are moments where someone wiser
offers advice to someone facing a conflict (internal or external). It offers clues about characters,
plot/foreshadowing, concepts, and develops theme.
a. What is the life lesson in this chapter and how will it affect the main character?
b. How does this life lesson connect to concepts, conflicts, characters or symbols in the text?
c. Does this life lesson still apply today? Do you agree or disagree with this life lesson?
The sign post Im doing is Words of the Wiser. An example from the book is when Scouts uncle
hits her right on the face, instead of hearing her side of the story. Its when Scout gives advice to
her uncle about children. I found an insert from the book is on page 85-86.
Uncle jack put his hands on his hips and looked down at me. And why do I not understand
children, Miss Jean Louise? Such as yours required little understanding. It was obstreperous,
disorderly and abusive----
You gonna give me a chance to tell you? I dont mean to sass you, Im tryin to tell you.
Uncle Jack sat down on the bed. His eyebrows came together, and he peered up at me
from under them. Proceed. he said.
I took a deep breath. Well, in the first place you never stopped to gimme a chance to tell
you my side of it---you just lit right into me.
The advice that scout gives is toward her uncle doesnt affect Scout as much but it affects her
uncle a lot. After Scout gives her advice on kids her uncle realizes he doesnt know much about
children. It will also help him be more fair. This will help him in the future.
This life lesson still applies today because in courtrooms and at households. In the courtroom
Mr. Glimer questioned Toms side of the story and Atticus questioned Mayellas and Mr. Ewells
side. In the household my mom would hear my side of the story and my sister's side when we
got in an argument. If you want to resolve a conflict equally you have to hear what happened in
two peoples point of view. So you can make a decision on what actually happened. I agree with
this because Scout is right you cant just assume what happened you have to be fair and listen
to both sides.
