Documentary Treatment Outline
Overview:
This documentary is about students who are first generation in college whom come
across struggles and are telling them to motivate the rest who are as well. (To help close the gap
in for underrepresented students)

Goal/Purpose of Film:
The purpose of this film is to reveal the educational barriers that keep the first generation
students from completing their goal of graduating college. My goal with this documentary is to
hope audience, whether whos watching is a first generation or just watching, witness that
finishing college can be challenging for everyone, but others had to work hard to get there.
-To encourage/ motivate student success
- Show the unnoticed challenges

Film Outline:
Intro:

Define what is a first generation student, what it means to be labeled as it

Start off with an interview of how a first generation student feels now in college
of their first semester, what did they expect and the reality,

Main points:

point out the differences in students with educated parents and students with not
educated parents

Situations involving parents

We see going to college as an equalizer to those who went to college (with jobs, society,
etc.)
How is life at college surrounded by educated people, then coming home to
uneducated people
I also want to add in some statistics of percentages of how many are FG, low income,
minority, etc.
Add in how some go to college to help support their family or to make them feel proud
(depends if in interview someone who sees this perspective)
Add a clip from my interview with an expert from the first generation community
interview some friends/students who are first generation to see how they feel now in
college and a struggle that is stressing them
is college doing a good job noticing the struggles of the first generation students
solutions/ tips that can help when struggling

Creative:
capture nice time lapse of students on campus
use statistics that goes along with my main points
in between scenes, Ill try to add in some sceneries of moments I capture
I plan on adding some type of music in the background in order to give it some
texture
