Investigate the process of anaerobic respiration in yeast

Problem statement: What is the change in lime water and the temperature of glucose solution
when there is the presence of yeast?
Hypothesis: When there is the presence of yeast, the lime water turns chalky and the
temperature rises.
Variable:
Manipulated variable: Presence of yeast
Responding variable: Change in lime water
Control variable: Volume of glucose
Apparatus and Material: 5% of yeast suspension, 5% glucose solution, paraffin oil, lime water,
boiling tube stoppers with delivery tube ,measuring cylinders, thermometer and beaker.
Procedures:
1. Boiling tube is filled with 20ml of glucose solution which has been boiled and then left to
cool down.
2. The boiling tubes are labeled A and B.
3. A small amount of yeast is put into boiling tubes.
4. Paraffin is then added to both boiling tubes.
5. The ends of delivery tube immersed in boiling tube filled 2ml of lime water.
6. The apparatus is left aside for one hour.
7. The initial temperature is recorded using the thermometer.
8. At the end, the final temperature is measure and recorded and the condition of the lime
water is observed and the smells of the solution in the boiling tube are recorded.
9. Steps 3 to 8 are repeated without presence of yeast.
