Maybe. Life in those sweet times before that changeover, for me, a fainly witless high school (or maybe junior high) loafer convinced he was highly skilled in the ways of the holy trinity of life/love/profound existence, scemed somewhat simplistic. The ‘voluminous consumption of liquid alcoholic beverage, the ability to stand up after said consumption, and the ability to arrange for the removal of bell buckle by study feialc hands whilst standing up aficr said consumption (corry), not to ‘mention the perfect sound of the existential swish -- those were the main troubles of the time. Everything else could preity much just go get fucked. Real moral dilemmas could wait for another goddamn day. ‘But then there was the sincere riddle of Punk Rock and this other, uh, "thing" called New Wave. Gary’ ‘Panter's legendary Jimbo character, who knew te prpleiies of youth the way he knew bad skin. may have been able to toast that "the oily good wave is a dead wave,” but he was lying through his teeth. New (Fucking) Wave was a real going ‘concer. Like, what exactly was it, and what the difference between punk and IT, and how ‘could you tell which one you belonged to, or should belong to, and why did seeing the B-51's & the Talking Heads in front of 2,000 people with beards give me the fucking willies? ‘One day, while standing around uncomfortably in a Cambridge, MA, New Wave clothing boutique, I was trying to ‘eavesdrop on some actual in-scene NW conversation between the entrepreneurs (Mimi and Salty, I think) as 1 was ‘allempiing to choose between a purchase of a button by 999 (totally unaware that there was a man in MI typing up the debut issue of 999 Times perhaps that very day) or the Delta 5. I forget the conversation, and to be honest, I probably bought both buttons, but I also picked up an issue of Slash Magazine, and my life has never really been the same since. Spreading the pollution and confusion of the new world cultural disorder. Slash helped clear the pathetic debris of the NW out of my life for good. For unerring style, opinion and content, plus the ability to conceptualize the written word as ‘a form of higher consciousness - - it was the greatest mag ever. And, among other things, it tumed me on to the subject of this thing you're holding in your hands right now. Vol 3, #2 of Slash, an issue dedicated to the Dils and "the Jamaican artists who created and lived ska music before your Lillywhite soul found it acceptable" (!), had a "Publication Update” column, and following the announcement that "the deterioration of your brain [is] no concem of ours," there was a listing fora Lansing, MI fanzine called Touch & Go. This raz supposedly defined themselves as "Pompous purveyors of pop and perversion” and had "specialized taste from Specials to the Fall," Mr. Kickboy Face The Music's summation: “good taste in music, a bit cut off." I promptly taped by 50 cents down onto a letter that probably contained the salutation "Dear Sir" ((leamed from a San Francisco fanzine a bit Jater that PUNKS were most definitely not to be referred to as "Sirs") ‘and sat by the mailbox. ‘That first issue to arrive, #4, was a bit cut ps (16 pages, atta of 12 reviews), but from the startling, grouchy pic of J. Lydon on the front, to the ly arrogant editorial ("A literary masterpiece. The epitome of excellence. The good. Just a few of the adjective 10 use to describe our fanzine."), to the full tilt barrage of HATE aimed at local Detroit club-going New Wavers, this mag thrilled my litte bitter ‘n disdain-starving eyeballs. It was edited by two guys known as DS (Dave Stimson) and TV (Tesco Vee) who had bumped into each other at "the local sin ‘emporitm," and who were willing to shelve their Uriah Heep LPs for a while to dediicate themselves to sorting out the ‘New Chaos of modem music. ‘Which is what they did. In anera where most every known and semi-known rock mag was swallowing -whole each befuddled crumb that corporate record executive dorks were conjuring up via the facade of London/N.Y./L.A. fashion- sense 10 force feed down the NW throat, T&G was reviewing the likes of Black Flag, Rema Rema, Phew, S.P.K., Middle Class, the Misfits, Friction & dozens of others - - simply because they had bought the records on divine personal intuition and dug the sounds those groups made to a fucking max. DS & TV thoroughly pissed on the dream of the Lene Lovich (and her wretched ilk) inspired minions with gusto, and I was all for it. The masses of the post-"77 dream and the mags that represented those losers considered this sort of stuff passe regurgitation. In an issue of the totally corporat dong engulfing NY Rocker around that time, editor Andrew Schwartz reviewed the Gems astounding debut LP, G.L.: "Darby Crashis a éerrible singer and his lyrics are just so much beer-n'-bad-acid spew .. . Icant listen to it at home, orremember one of the sixteen (!) tracks after repeated spins.” Need I say more? Those were very fucked times. Asissues of T&G progressed, they got bigger and more informationally whacked 'n dense. The review section was truly formidable. Seemingly every odd record from the middle of nowhere that. was totally lacking in industry hype was covered. T&G was completely on top of the bu DC hardcore scene, before anyone, not to mention the ‘Midwest stuff going on that would eventually be fully documented by the T&G label. ‘The Misfits, then the dogs of ‘NYY. had about 6 fans on the entire plane. Stimson and Vee were two of them. And you, the oh-so-current hipster of today might think this was no big deal, but this was practically the pre-industrial age of independent distribution. The " gonzoid’ individualistic aesthetic so fully developed within the slim pages of T&G was, 10 be blunt, phenomenal. ‘After about 15 issues or 50, DS sorta dropped out of the picture, but Tesco slogged on, full of bile & invention for another coupla years, for a total of 22 issues. Frankly, there's been nothing like itsince. Paraphrasing a smart man, ‘Touch & Go was "not for everybody, butneither is good taste."
