Choose one question below to answer in response to your

independent novel. Please restate the question in your response, so
it is clear which question you are answering. Your response should
be 12 point font, double spaced, and at least to a page of writing.
1. Describe the main character(s) in the story. What do they look
like, sound like, act like, etc.? What do they learn in this story?
Explain in detail.
(Insurgent) The main characters in the story is Tris. She is very selfless and
strong. In the story it says The prefrontal cortex is the region of the brain
behind the forehead, so to speak, its responsible for organizing your thoughts
and actions to attain your goals, yours is much larger than average yet the
orbitofrontal cortex is remarkably small the orbitofrontal cortex is the reward
center of the brain. Those who exhibit reward-seeking behavior have a large
orbitofrontal cortex This shows that she is really responsible and can organize
her thoughts and actions easier. Because her orbitofrontal cortex is so small
that it means that she isnt as motivated by rewards but about what is right and
the smart thing to so. In the story Tris is also very strong. In the text is says I
close my hand around the knife handle and squeeze He leans closer I lurch
forward, pulling my hand out of my pocket. I close my eyes as I thrust the blade
up toward him. I dont want to see his blood. Tris had her hands tied and she
was trapped in an elevator but she kept her cold and still tried to escape and
she did. Also earlier in the story you hear about her training and how hard she
work to become as strong as she is today. Tris is also not just physically strong

she is mentally strong. She has been through a lot like her parents dieing, her
friend being controlled into killing her so she had to kill him, her brother being a
traitor, having a whole fraction against her and more but she still keeps fighting
and never gives up. This show she has a strong will.

2. What is the main problem of the story? If you know it already how was the problem solved? If you dont know yet - how do
you think the problem will be resolved (or will it at all?) Be
specific!
3. If you were the author, what would you change about this
story? Why would you change it? Be specific!
4. If you could be any character in the story, who would you be?
Why would you like to be that character? Explain in detail.
5. Summarize what you read today. What were the most
important events? What did you learn about the characters?
How did the conflict develop/resolve? Be specific!
(A Tale Dark and Grim) At the beginning of the chapter Hansel and Gretel set off
again to find a place to live. They finally decide to live by themselves in the
Wood of Life. They make this decision because all the other families they have
been with have been terrible. When they get to the Wood of Life a tree talks to
them it says But I ask of you one thing. Please, take no more than you need. Life
here exists in a delicate balance. Do not upset it. The first night they follow the
tree rule but the next day when Hansel is out collecting berries he kills a baby
animal that they didnt need. Gretel is furious at him. She tells him that he cant
keep doing this. But he does until he finally turns into an animal himself and has

killed away all the life in the woods. Gretel has left him at this point. One day
hunters come into the woods and they cant find anything to hunt till they spot
Hansel thinking it is a beast they shot him and bring him back with them. Gretel
believing her brother is dead decides to move on and find another home. In the
next chapter Gretel falls upon a small village were a old lady takes her in she
finds a new happy life with the old lady. In the tavern she meets a boy who is
falls in love with. They become closer and closer until on day the boy asks her to
come to his home with him. When she tells the old lady where she is going the
old lady refuses to let her go. After she said she couldnt go the boy goes off to
flirt with another girl and they start to become farther apart till Gretel finally
says she will come. She starts walking on the trail to his house and the trail goes
deep into the woods. When she gets there, there is an lady in chains claiming to
be the boys mother. The mother tells her to run for her son is a murder of
sweet girls like her. The boy starts to walk now the stairs with a girl in his hand
and Gretel hurries to hide. The boy processes to chop up the girl and makes a
soup out of her. When Gretel sees this she flees in fear. When she gets back
she exposes the boy to the townspeople and they kill him. And the chapter ends
with Gretel going to find a new home.

6. Make a connection to yourself, another text, or to the world.

How is this novel similar to something you have observed in
yourself, another novel, or the world? Explain the connection
in detail.

7. Pretend you could interview one of the characters in the novel.

What questions would you ask that character and why? What
would you hope to learn about the character? Be specific.
8. Would you recommend this novel to a friend? Why or why
not? What, specifically, about the novel made you decide the
way you did?
(Insurgent) I would recommend this novel to a friend for the following reasons.
First its has a lot of action making it a real page turner. Because it has a lot of
action it makes the book really interesting so there arent any parts where you
are just reading it and it gets really boring. Also when it has a lot of action you
tend to read it fast making it seem shorter than it actually is. Second, this book
has a lot of different genres mixed in so anyone would like it. For example there
is sifi She must be planning another simulation. in this book there are
simulations that can control you or show you want you fear or decide what
faction you are in. These simulations can do all sorts of stuff which is very
futuristic. There is romance and I kissed him for the first time in this story
there are a lot of couples and romance. There is also tragedy, comedy, action
and much more. Third, you can relate to the book. For instances the main
character loses someone they love which most of readers can relate to. When
a book is relatable it is more interesting to you because you can make connects
and its easier to infer things. For the reasons I have just stated I would highly
recommend this book.

9. Make a prediction about what will happen next in the story.

What information in the text led you to that prediction?
Explain in detail.
(Divergent) I think Tris is going to become a good fighter and become a high
rank. Because usually in stories when someone just started something they are
usually pretty bad but you get to watch them grow throughout the story. Tris
started out really bad but you can already see the growth. For example at first
she was really bad at shooting a gun but by the end she could hit the center of
the target. In the text it states I have a black eye, and a split lip, and a bruised
jaw. You know, if you could just learn to attack first, you might do better. Tris
was the first to jump off the building so she probably has a lot of courage and
that is what Dauntless is all about. With those characteristics she will be ranked
high if she just kept trying. I also think that Tris and Al will become a couple
because they are always talking with each other and Al helped Tris out after
the fight. Tris and Al also were scared when Christina was hanging over the cliff
and held each other for comfort. In the text it says Without thinking I grab Als
arm and squeeze it as tightly as I can. I think Tris is going to become a good
fighter, get a high rank and get together with Al.

10. Rewrite a section of the novel in a way that you wished it

would happen. Begin by providing a brief description of the
original event, followed by your updated version.
11. Pretend you are turning this novel into a movie. Who would
you cast as your main characters? Why are these actors/people
fitting to play the roles? What specific skills do they bring that
you would need? Explain in detail.

12. Choose one character in the novel and explain why you
would or would not like to have that character as your friend.
Provide examples from the text to support your decision.
13. Choose one character and describe how that characters
actions affect other characters in the story. Does this character
have a positive influence on others, or is this character a
negative influence? Provide examples from the text to support
your decision.
(Insurgent) In Insurgent Marcus has a negative influence on other characters
because he creepies around and is hiding information from the other people. In
the text it says ... but instead I follow Marcus. I expect him to walk to the guests
dormitory, but he crosses the field behind the dining hall and walks into the
water-filtration building. It also says But you do know she said you know why
she attacked when she did I may not be Candor anymore but I can still tell when
someone is keeping the truth from me Inquisitiveness is self-serving, Johanna.
He is keeping information from them that could help them get to the bottom of
Erudites plan. We never found out what he was doing in the water-filtration
building but the next day Erudites showed up and he might have been behind it.
Also Marcus and his son Tobias have a complicated past. In Tobias fear
landscape one of his four fears was his dad with a belt in his hand. We never
find out for sure what happened but you can tell its bad. In the text it says
Tobias was right about you I said you're nothing but an arrogant lying piece
of garbage ... He doesn't mention you enough to say anything like that I figured

it out all on my own I clench my teeth you're almost nothing to him you know
and as time goes on you become less and less Even though Marcus is his
father Tobias wants nothing to do with him thats one of the reasons he
switched to Dauntless. Another reason is that Marcus isnt the happy and
encouraging type. When he is talking to Tris he doesnt encourage her but put
her down. In the text it says I could help you I say. Marcuss Upper lip curls.
You have no idea how ridiculous that sounds. He spits the word at me. You may
have succeeded in shutting down the attack simulation, girl, but it was only by
luck alone, not skill. I would die of shock if you managed to do anything useful
again for a long time. Tris is offering to help him and instead of taking her help
he just is rude to her. In conclusion Marcus creepies around, did stuff to Tobias
and put people down which has a negative effect on the other characters.

14. Choose an interesting/confusing/important/enjoyable

15. Who tells this story? Is it the best person to tell it? How
would the story be different if told from a different characters
perspective?
16. Pick a scene in which you disagreed with how a character
handled a situation and rewrite it in the way you think it
should have happened.

17. What quality of which character strikes you as a good

characteristic to develop within yourself over the years? Why?
How does the character demonstrate this quality?
