Translation of our SLOs Project

Introduction: We understand that these learning outcomes are hard to define and measure
(especially considering that they can develop out of sequence), but we believe that they are
necessary for success in a students life and career.
Rhetorical Knowledge: Students should be able to use rhetorical strategies on different kinds of
documents and in different situations. Students should also be able to write with intention to
different audiences and in different genres.
-Students should be able to write different texts for different kinds of audiences with
thoughts to purpose, audience, and context, and should be able to analyze and understand
information from a variety of sources.
-Students should be able to understand genres and how they are created.
-Students should be versatile in their writing and thinking.
Critical Reading: Students should be able to read for understanding and context, and should be
able to apply what they read to their lives and to other texts that they encounter.
-Students should read to learn.
-Students should know how to critically analyze their own work and the works of others.
-Students should be able to recognize bias and credibility in different sources.
-Students should be able to understand the relationship between assertions and evidence.
Composing Process: Students should learn how to create, develop, and finish projects in a
manner that is helpful and unique to them.
-Students should be able to understand and utilize the revision process.
-Students should learn how to use criticism and praise to better their writing.
-Students should learn how to engage with and summarize source material.
Knowledge of Conventions: Students should be able to use writing conventions (including
citation processes) in an appropriate manner.
-Students should be able to take their writing to a higher level as college students.
-Students should be able to understand why conventions vary.
-Students should understand what plagiarism is and how to avoid it.
-Students should use grammar appropriately.

Critical Reflection: Students should be able to use writing to make sense of their thoughts and
feelings.
-Students should be able to reflect using different rhetorical strategies.
-Students should use writing as a means for reflection.
-Students should understand their process and rhetorical awareness.
-Students should understand that reflection is a necessary part of learning, thinking, and
communicating.
