Dead Poets Society

Which scene made an impact on you and why?

The Oh captain my captain scene at the finale of the movie. This scene made an
impact on me because against all odds, doubt, and fears that Todd had. He made a
stand. He showed us that we should not fall into conformity but instead we should
follow our own path no matter how delusional or crazy it might seem.
The scene builds up with Todd Anderson yawping in class against Headmaster
Nolans opinion. The other dead poet society members were too shocked about the
recent events so they couldnt do anything. They were also very scared. With the
exception of course of Mr. Cameron who turned out to be a sell-out.
Then, as Keating exits the room, Todd couldnt contain his self much longer. Hence,
the outburst.
To show his utmost respect to his greatest professor, he stood up on his study table.
At the beginning of the movie, Todd was the one with the shy, silent, and the selfdoubting character. Mr. Keating changed Todd in the best possible way. Keating
helped Todd find his own voice.
That scene shows that no matter how much restraints are put on people. The free
soul will always break free. It is in us if we want to fall into the herd to pursue
those dreams that pay better but eats our life away. Or break-free and choose a life
that truly is worth living for.
What can you say about the character of Robin Williams? Was he a big
influence to his students? Why?
Mr. Keating (Robin Williams) was a very peculiar professor. Considering the fact that
they are in a prestigious preparatory school for college. Keating was very unusual.
Robin Williams portrayed the character very well. In a school where the teachers are
terrorizing and they are expecting discipline above anything else. Mr. Keatings class
was an escape route for the students.
Of course, he was a big influence to his students. Sadly, he had to take the fall for
them but he took that light-heartedly. He made them realize that there are others
things in life beyond school boundaries. His students were sent to that school with
minimal interaction with the outside world. The school believes that they will be
distracted if they interact with regular people (These kids come from affluent
families).
He made them realize that there is more to life than preserving their families
legacy. And learning should be interactive, fun, and gives a feeling of selfrealization.
As a whole, what is the significance of the movie to young movie viewers?
Technically, if the movie was shown to young Filipino viewers. Ages approximating
16-19. They will most likely and unfortunately, get bored.

I myself, enjoyed the movie. Im 23 by the way. This kind of movie requires critical
thinking. It instills a feeling of self-actualization and realization. It is not for the
masses.
With the current culture of kids these days. They will be minimally affected by
watching this movie. Teens these days enjoy movie that is popular and have very
shallow plots. They are unlikely to engross themselves into beautiful movies such as
Dead Poets Society.
Sad as that might sound. That is the truth.
Scent of a Woman
State the dialogue between two characters which you like best and why?
Lt. Col. Frank Slade: Oh, where do I go from here, Charlie?
Charlie Simms: If you're tangled up, just tango on.
Lt. Col. Frank Slade: You askin' me to dance, Charlie?

This dialogue came up during the scene where Slade wanted to kill himself. Charlie
finds out and tries to convince him not to.
I liked this dialogue because it is a figurative way of saying, Life goes on, keep
moving on. That whatever happens, happens.
The first mention of the line If youre tangled up, just tango on during the tango
scene. Donna, the girl who Slade danced with was afraid to make mistakes. Hence,
this reply.
This dialogue is a good reminder to all of us that life is not perfect. It will get tangled
sooner or later, that is just how it works. But when it does get tangled, it is in us if
we want to move on or not. It is our final decision if we want to push harder and
untangle ourselves or get caught in the gravity of the dilemma and ultimately
destroy ourselves.
What is life but a dance of tango?
Who among the characters made an impact to you?
Obviously, that would be Lt. Col. Frank Slade. Slade was a bad-mouthed and rude
old guy. But this is because he is of military nature. Military people are often straight
to the point hence the rudeness.
This character made an impact on me because he personifies a lot of people I know.
That includes me as well.
Nearly all of us have worries inside us. At some point in our life we think we cannot
no longer move on. Feeling that it is too late, too hard or too impossible. He was
blind and his family was far from him. He had nobody except his patient-niece.

We are just like Colonel Slade. When there are thing inside us that we cannot solve.
We often hide that. Feeling that nobody else could help us.
But that is wrong.
At some point in our lives, there will come a Charlie to save us. To help us realize
who we truly are. To tell us that it is not yet too late.
Sometimes, it is not the old that always teaches the young ones. It could be the
young ones, like Charlie, a kid from college preparatory school that could truly
enlighten us.
It's a great day for singing a song / It's a great day for moving along / It's a great day for morning to
night / It's a great day for everybody's plight.
