Introduction

Oxalate complexes are coordination compounds produced by reacting oxalic acid

with a transition metal. For copper(II) oxalate K2[Cu(C2O4)2(H2O2)] complexes, copper
is a transition metal that acts as a Lewis acid while the oxalate ion as well as water
acts as Lewis bases.
CuSO4.5H2O + 2K2C2O4.H2O K2[Cu(C2O4)2(H2O2)] +K2SO4 +5H2O

Objective
To prepare a copper(II) oxalate complex.
Procedure
1. 2.00 g copper(II) sulphate pentahydrate was weighed and added it to 30ml of
H2O in small beaker.
2. Heat slowly on hot plate until solid dissolved.
3. 6.20 g of potassium oxalate monohydrate was weighed and putted in another
small beaker and dissolved with 30-40ml distilled H2O at room temperature.
4. The heated copper(II) sulphate added slowly to the potassium oxalate
solution used funnel and swirling the beaker slowly to mix.
5. Chilled in ice bath for 30 minutes.
6. Blue crystals precipitate produced after cooling.
7. The complex collected using suction filtration and the crystals was washed
twice with 3ml portions of cold water.
8. Crystals dried in oven.
Result

Theoretical yield of K2[Cu(C2O4)2(H2O2)] = 4.90 g

Mass of K2[Cu(C2O4)2(H2O2)] obtained = 4.57 g
Percent yield of K2[Cu(C2O4)2(H2O2)] =
