ASSIGNMENT 1
(Dateline: 5th October 2016)
1. A universal serial bus (USB) port is a plug-and-play interface
that allows a computer to communicate with peripheral and
other devices. The USB 3.0 specification permits data transfer
between a computer and a peripheral device at rates up to 625
megabits per second, which is about ten times as fast as the
USB 2.0 standard (www.usb.org). Few important features of
USB is the ability to swap peripherals without having to power
down a computer and capable of supplying power to external
peripherals. The amount of current that can be provided over a
USB port is defined in the USB specification in terms of unit
loads, where one unit load is specified to be 100 mA. All USB
ports default to low-power ports at one unit load, but can be
changed under software control to high-power ports capable of
supplying up to five unit loads or 500 mA.
a. A 680 mAh lithium-ion battery is completely discharged
(i.e., 0 mAh), how long will take to recharge the battery to
its full capacity of 680 mAh from a low-power USB port?
How much charge is stored in the battery at the end of the
charging process?
b. A 630 mAh lithium-battery is to be recharged from a highpower USB port supplying 150 mA of current. At beginning
of the recharge, 7.8 C of charge is stored in the battery.
The recharging process halts when the stored charge
reaches 35.9 C. How long does it take to recharge the
battery?
2. Why do headlights dim when a car engine is turned on? Create
an electrical circuit model to predict this phenomenon.
3. A 12 V voltage source is to be used in conjunction with two
standard resistors to design a voltage divider that will output 5
V when connected to a 100-A load. While keeping the
consumed power a low as possible, minimize the error
between the actual output and the required 5 V. Design or
model the divider circuit and justify your answer.
