HOW THE
GOVERNMENT
WORKS

Background:
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern
Ireland are all under Her Majestys Government. The
Government is led by a Prime Minister who belongs to
the decision-making committee named the Cabinet.
The office is not established by any constitution or law
but exists only by long-established convention.

Prime Minister

Theresa Mary May is the Prime Minister of the United


Kingdom. She is a leader of the Conservative party
and has been in office since July of 2016. They are
ultimately responsible for all policy and decisions.

government agencies
Appoint members of the government
The principal government figure in the House of
Commons.

The Cabinet

The Cabinet is made up of the senior members of


government. Every week during Parliament, members
of the Cabinet (Secretaries of State from all
departments and some other ministers) meet to
discuss the most important issues for the government.

Minister

Ministers are chosen by the Prime Minister from the


members of the House of Commons and House of
Lords. They are responsible for the actions, successes
and failures of their departments.

Legislation:

Laws go through several


stages before they are
passed by Parliament.
The House of Commons
and the House of Lords
work together to make
them.
