The History of Music Magazines

It all started with first issue of billboard


magazine it was printed in 1894, however the
music magazine industry all started becoming
well known around the 1930s.
TBC provided different music genres and was
the foundations this then gave available
space for places on the American top 40.
Melody maker was next and that was in 1926
this was covering the music genre jazz.
However by the 50sa new competition from
new musical express brought attention for the
younger generation, which was rock n roll.
This gave weekly information about upcoming
record releases.
1967 was the rolling stones magazine era,
whereby was a documented music as an
important part of the youth culture, this then
gave a great social change as the rolling stones was more involved
with the culture of the music rather then the factual information.
Smash hits magazine was created in 1978 this was aimed towards
the younger generation of teenagers. This was a magazine, which
was key for development of music as the magazine specifically
covered music in an ordered genre-specific. Kerrang came in the
1980s, which was a local competitor.
