electromyogram(EMG).Electrodesattachedaroundtheeyesmonitoreyemovements,
recordedastheelectrooculogram(EOG).Inaddition,otherelectrodesand
transducingdevicescanbeusedtomonitorautonomicmeasuressuchasheartrate,
respiration,andchangesintheabilityoftheskintoconductelectricity.

Alphaactivityconsistsofregular,mediumfrequencywavesof812Hz.Thebrain
producesthisactivitywhenapersonisrestingquietly,notparticularlyarousedorexcited
andnotengagedinstrenuousmentalactivity(suchasproblemsolving).Althoughalpha
wavessometimesoccurwhenapersonseyesareopen,theyaremuchmoreprevalent
whentheyareclosed.
betaactivityconsistsofirregular,mostlylowamplitudewavesof1330Hz.Beta
activityshowsdesynchrony;itreflectsthefactthatmanydifferentneuralcircuitsinthe
brainareactivelyprocessinginformation.Desynchronizedactivityoccurswhena
personisalertandattentivetoeventsintheenvironmentoristhinkingactively.
