1.) African Americans
- Moved north between 1910-1930, factory jobs up north
- Oscar De Priest: first black congressman from the North
- Harlem Renaissance: black intellectuals and writers achieved
Prominence
- Louis Armstrong: performed in-front of all white crowds
2.) Responses to African Americans
- KKK revived, 100% Americanism, limited to white protestants
- Spread north, 40% of all KKK members were in OH, IL, IN
- A KKK write-in nominee almost won mayor of Detroit
- Went after Catholics and Jews as well
- Sex scandal amongst leaders and 1924 immigration led to downfall

- Rise of fundamentalism: clung to Christian doctrines, world is growing
worse
- Fundamentalist-modernist controversy: battle over control of schools

- Anti-Evolution Crusade: John T. Scopes was employed to teach
evolution
- Eventually convicted for violating Tennessee law, which
stated divine creation had to be taught
- Fundamentalist Successes: Bible Colleges & Seminaries,
o fundamentalist institutions prospered
4.) Technology
- Automobiles : 9 mil in 1920, 27 mil in 1930
- led to rise in suburbs and tourism
- radio: KDKA in Pittsburgh was first station to air
- eventually became high end furniture as well
- telephone, refrigerator, etc.

Speculation: buy cheap, sell hi
Bull market: stock market characterized by rising prices and optimism
