lifestyle (Line drills, stretches, pushups, etc.)
Students will understand and perform the three basic basketball passes (chest, bounce,
overhead.)

NASPE STANDARDS
NASPE Standard 1 - The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a
variety of motor skills and movement patterns.
NASPE Standard 2 - The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts,
principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.
RATIONALE: The students need to be familiar with and practice the skill because it is a basic
component of basketball fundamentals.
PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE:
The students need to know how to perform the line drills that they were previously taught in
class (lunges, backpedal, high knees, knee pulls, carry-overs A-skips.)

ANTICPATORY SET: Today we will continue our basketball unit but will be moving on to
passing.
MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK (60 minutes)
Introductory Activity: 8-10 minutes
Fitness Activity: 2-5 minutes
Lesson Focus: 40 minutes
Closing Activity: 2-5 minutes

6 basketballs

ADAPTATIONS FOR SPECIAL NEEDS:
There are several students with social anxiety in the class. They will be grouped with students
that I feel will make them most comfortable.
INTEGRATION WITH OTHER DISCIPLINES:

Physics can be incorporated into the lesson by describing the physics of shooting a basketball.
DIVERSITY:
Race/Ethnicity: When put shooting groups, students will be integrated with students of other
ethnicitites.
Gender: Males and Females will be split up as equally as possible when put into shooting
groups.
Social Class: Students of all social classes are grouped together and interact with each other
when shooting.
Ability: Students will be put into shooting groups with other students of similar abilities to
create a competitive environment.
CONTENT SEQUENCE OF MATERIAL:
Handout that describes the three basic basketball passes.
Introductory Activity Line Drills/Stretching (8-10 minutes)

Lunges (2 each leg then jog)

Knee pulls (2 each knee then jog)

High-knees (To volleyball line then jog)

Backpedal (To half-court then jog)

Carry-overs (Full-court)

A-Skips (Half-court then jog)

Mario line drill

Right-Right, Left-Left Line Drill

10 build-ups

Have the class leaders lead the stretches.

Fitness Activity Push-ups (3-5 minutes)

Push-ups (Set of 6,8,10)

Lesson Focus Basketball Passing- 40 minutes

Describe the three basic basketball passes (chest, bounce, overhead.)


Demonstrate a chest pass.
Divide the students into groups of four and have them do chest passes to each other in a
clockwise fashion.
Demonstrate a bounce pass.
Have the students do bounce passes in their groups in a clockwise fashion.
Demonstrate an overhead pass.
Have the students do overhead passes in their groups in a clockwise fashion

Closing Activity Static stretch (2-5 minutes)


EXTENDED ACTIVITIES:
If Lesson Finishes Early
Weather permitting: Allow the class to do team activities on the football field (football, soccer,
volleyball.) If inclimate weather, do team activities in the gymnasium.

ASSESSMENT OF LESSON
The students will be assessed by the effort they give when performing the drills.
