    ofCremona'sdominance.Hisworkismarkedbyeleganceandan
    awarenessofgeometricalprinciplesindesign.Hismodellingisof
    greatdelicacy,fromtheregularwindsofthescrolltothetipsofthe
    fholes.TheinstrumentsmadeforCharlesIXofFrancewerealso
    decoratedinpolychromewiththeRoyalarmsandareparticularly
    striking.Theoldestsurvivingexample,dated.1572,istheearliest
    celloinexistence.Unfortunately,thePhilistineeffortsofpast
    repairershavereducedthelargedimensions ofthese
    instrumentstothesmallermodernsize,therebydestroyingtheir
    harmonyandintegrit.Significantly,thepegboxeswere
    originallymadetocontainonlythreestrings,liketheinstrument
    depictedbyFerrari(inapainting)in1535.Theaddition
    ofafourthstringtothecellowasprobablyaninnovationof
    Andrea'sownlifetime,sincelaterinstrumentsmadebyhimwere
    clearlyoriginallydesignedtoaccommodatefourtuningpegs.
    Andreaandhisfamilywereconsummatecraftsmen

    varnish,whichwasperhapsthegreatestpossessionofthe
    Cremonesemakers,butmodified thepatterns,most
