TENNIS BALL ACTIVITY

Directions:

Place the grid paper on a long flat surface.

Draw an x- and y-axis on the grid paper.
Cover the tennis ball with water until it is soaked, take it out of the bowl, and roll across the
grid paper such that it intersects both axes.
Use the marker to trace just above (or below) the line made by the tennis ball.

1. List 2 ordered pairs that fall most closely on graph.

x-value

y-value

2. Using the two points that you think best represent your line, calculate the slope.

3. Using the same points as question 2, calculate the linear equation for your line in pointslope form. Label your line with this equation.

4. Using your equation from question 3, calculate the x- and y-intercepts. Label these on your
graph.

5. Calculate the linear equation for your line in slope-intercept form. Label your line with this
equation.

6. Is your line a direct variation line? How do you know?

7. Write a real-world problem which your line might represent. Interpret the slope and yintercept for your problem. Write this on the back of your graph.

Checklist does your graph have?
