Pre-Assessment Summary
‘The standard to be addressed in this Social Studies learning segment is as follows:
“People have many wants and make decisions to satisfy those wants, These decisions impact,
others” (Ohio Department of Education, 2011). In order to determine students’ levels of prior
knowledge, I created a pre-assessment with two parts. In Part A, the students had to help the
teacher pick which gift to buy. In each questions they were given two choices and asked to pick
the one that they think they needed more. On the Part B of the assessment, students were shown
a toy car and a drawing, They had to write a letters by the item that was store bought and a
letter h by the item that was homemade.
Both parts of the assessment were graded separately so as to form separate instructional
sgroups for the first day. On Part A, 11 students earned the highest score possible, a 3/3. Six
students earned a score of 2/3 or lower. Based on the results of the pre-assessment, I have
decided to create a modified objective for one instructional group on day 1. ‘The objective will
read “Given five items that are either a want or a need and told that they can only have four,
‘TSW be able to pick four items and rank them in order of most important to least important when
working in a group of three to demonstrate and understanding that people have many wants and
make decision to satisfy those wants”. This objective will be assessed via checklist. The
remaining students will work with the teacher to satisfy the general objective “Given an item, the
children will place it in the appropriate gift box labeled want or need based on whether or not
they think it is more important than another item the teacher is holding up to demonstrate an
understanding that people have wants and make decisions to satisfy those wants”. ‘The general
objective will still be assessed via anecdotal notes. In Part B of the assessment eight of the students earned the highest score possible, 2/2.
‘Nine students earned a score of 1/2 or less. This shows that while some of the class has an
understanding of homemade versus store bought, about half of the class has litle to no prior
knowledge in this area. For this reason, two versions of the photo quiz will be given on day two
of the leaning segment. The group with the scores of 1/2 or lower on the pre-assessment will
take Quiz A in which they will be asked to pick whether or not everyday items are homemade or
factory made. The group with scores of 2/2 on the pre-assessment will take the version of the
photo quiz in which they are asked to pick whether or not traditional factory-made Christmas
gifts and traditional home-made Kwanzaa gifts are homemade or factory made. Links both
versions of the photo-quiz may be found on the last page of the document.
