Ethiopia: The extraordinary

story of Makda Haji

By Sarah Berry
Makda Haji is not your average runner.
The 29-year-old is beating Olympians,
won the Sydney marathon this year,
seven minutes ahead of the second female athlete. She is also returning to
defend her 15-kilometre City2Sea title
in Melbourne on Sunday.
These alone are extraordinary achievements. They are all the more extraordinary because of circumstances under which she has achieved them.
One and a half years ago, Makda fled
an unsafe situation in Ethiopia after
her father was killed and, leaving behind her mother and siblings, she arrived in Australia not speaking a word
of English for the Gold Coast Marathon.
Makda Haji is back to defend the City2Sea title she won in 2015.
Makda Haji is back to defend the City2Sea title she won in 2015.
Now, living in Red Cross accommodation in Melbourne, while she waits
for her asylum application to be processed, Haji has just enough money to
feed herself and catch public transport
to training.
The prize money she wins from running competitions she sends back to
her family in Ethiopia, explains coach
Gregor Gojrzewski, who began training Makda about a year ago when she
approached him at the Essendon track
and, in broken English, asked for his
assistance.
He took her on, he says, because prodigious talent aside, she really needs
help.
She didnt know where she was going to sleep the next day, says Gojrzewski, a former representative for
Poland who coaches numerous elite
Australian athletes.
Makda Haji.
Makda Haji.
Gojrzewski now trains Makda three
times a week, while on other days she
learns English and runs twice daily by
herself as she patiently awaits her fate.
Shes in limbo, he explains, say-

ing that Makda has been moved three

times in the last year. Its very hard,
but she has good mental strength and
is very self-motivated.
Luckily, Gojrzewski says that she has
amazing people helping her, including physiotherapist Chris Constantinou, who is sponsoring Makda with
treatments for injury prevention, a
counsellor, Halake Ganyu and the Red
Cross.

Red Cross supports people in the

community who are seeking asylum,
a spokeswoman from Red Cross told
Fairfax. Asylum seekers can face extreme hardship and uncertainty about
the future. Our programs are designed
to provide support and opportunities
for asylum seekers while they resolve
their immigration status.
We cannot comment on any specific
individuals or whether they are or are
not a client.
The story of Makda Haji shows the
incredible contributions that newcomers to Australia can make as well as
their amazing strength and resilience
in the face of extreme hardship.

Makdas preparation on the morning

of the race will involve an early break-
fast toast or Ethiopian porridge, Go- ::

warm-up including some easy jogging, acceleration and 15 minutes of
getting focused.

For recreational runners, Gojrzewski advises staying well hydrated and

having some type of carb for breakfast
(toast and honey, porridge or juice, for
example. Some people have eggs, but
I wouldnt recommend a full English
breakfast, he says, chuckling.)
He suggests a light jog to warm-up and
wake your body up, but no static
stretching and advises against going
with the crowd. Listen to your own
body, he says, adding that the optimal pace is one where you can still
talk.
After the race he recommends eating
protein and a good breakfast. Your
body needs food, he says, adding that
jumping in the ocean or getting a massage are good ways to cool your body
down post race. But his best advice?
Enjoy it.

(CPJ) Nairobi, November
17, 2016Ethiopia should immediately release all journalists detained
amid an intensifying crackdown on
the media, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today. In recent
weeks, Ethiopian authorities have
jailed a newspaper editor, as well as
two members of the award-winning
Zone 9 bloggers collective, which has
faced continuous legal harassment on
terrorism and incitement charges. A
fourth journalist has been missing for
a week; his family fears he is in state
custody.Zone 9 Bloggers, Ethiopia
The crackdown on the media comes
amid mass arrests following large
protests that led the government to
declare a state of emergency on October 9. Security forces have detained
more than 11,000 people since the
state of emergency was declared, Taddesse Hordofa, of the Ethiopian governments State of Emergency Inquiry
Board, said in a televised statement
on November 12.

Silencing those who criticize
the governments handling of protests
will not bring stability, CPJ Africa
Program Coordinator Angela Quintal said from New York. The constant
pressure on Zone 9 bloggers with repeated arrests and court appearances
is clearly designed to intimidate the
remaining independent journalists in
Ethiopia.

Ethiopias Supreme Court
on November 15 continued hearing
prosecutors appeal of a lower courts
October 2015 acquittal of four bloggers from the Zone 9 collectiveBefekadu Hailu, Natnail Feleke, Abel
Wabella, and Atnaf Berhaneon terrorism charges, campaigners reported on social media.

Security forces again detained Befekadua co-founder of the
collective, which CPJ honored with
its 2015 International Press Freedom
Awardfrom his home on November
11, according to news reports. Authorities have not yet announced any
new charge against the blogger. The
Africa News Agency quoted Befekadus friends saying that they believed
he may have been arrested following
an interview he gave to the U.S.-government-funded broadcaster Voice of
Americas Amharic service, in which

he criticized the governments handling of the protests.

An Ethiopian journalist in
exile in Kenya, speaking on condition
of anonymity for fear of retribution,
told CPJ that Befekadus criticism of
the governments handling of protests
in the Oromo and Amhara regions of
Ethiopia on his blog may have also
led to his detention.

When the terrorism charge
against the bloggers was dismissed
by the judge in October last year, Befekadu was informed that he would
still face incitement charges, according to media reports. That case is still
before the courts.

Ethiopian Information Minister Negeri Lencho did not respond
to CPJs calls and text messages seeking more information.
Security forces also detained another Zone 9 blogger, Natnail Feleke, on
October 4 on charges he had made
seditious remarks in a restaurant
while criticizing security forces lethal
dispersal of a protest, according to diaspora news websites.

Separately, a court in the capital Addis Ababa on November 15

sentenced Getachew Worku, the editor of the independent weekly newspaper Ethio-Mihidar, to one year in
prison on charges of defamation and
spreading false information in connection with an article published in
the newspaper alleging corruption
in a monastery, the Addis Standard
news website reported.

Abdi Gada, an unemployed
television journalist, has not been
seen since November 9, family and
friends told diaspora media. The
journalists family and friends told
the Ethiopian diaspora opposition
website Voices for Voiceless that they
fear he is in state custody.

Ethiopia ranked fourth on
CPJs 2015 list of the 10 Most Censored Countries and is the thirdworst jailer of journalists in Africa,
according to CPJs 2015 prison census.

Trudeau Offers Trump Congratulations And An Invitation To Canada

The Huffington Post Canada
doesnt really matter if Trump snubs Canada as his first state visit. The trips are often a
way for the Secret Service to test operations
in a friendly and close country, he said.
Whether it is first or not, isnt as important
as whether it happens, he said.
The Trudeau government, who expected Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton
would win, was quick to extend an olive

over. In February, Meti and her
classmates joined a protest in East
Hararghe, in Ethiopias Oromia
region, against the governments
displacement of farmers around
Addis Ababa, security force abuses,
and the repression of opposition
voices. When security forces started
shooting, she and her classmates
ran; she turned to see her brother
shot dead. Later that night, security
forces arrested her father and two of
her brothers. Then school officials
informed her they were suspending
her from school for her participation
in the protest.
Demonstrators chant slogans while
flashing the Oromo protest gesture
during Irreecha, the thanksgiving
festival of the Oromo people, in
Bishoftu town, Oromia region,
Ethiopia, October 2, 2016.
Now she is trying to leave Ethiopia
for South Africa. I have no future,
she told me. The government will
not hear our voices. They will keep
killing and arresting until we stop
our protest.
This week marks one year since
protests in Ethiopia began and, sadly,
Metis words have come true.
Security forces have killed hundreds,
detained tens of thousands, and
shattered the lives of countless
families over the last year. Protester
anger boiled over following
Octobers Irreecha cultural festival,
when security forces mishandling
of the massive crowd caused a
stampede, resulting in many deaths.
In response, angry mobs destroyed
private and government property,
particularly in the Oromia region.
On October 9, the government
announced a country-wide state of
emergency, signaling an increase
in the militarized response to
protesters demands for reform. So

far, the announced measures appear

to codify many of the security forces
abuses thus far, including arbitrary
detention.
The governments blocking of mobile
internet, restrictions on social
media, and bans on communication
with foreign groups mean little
information has gotten out since
October 9. Government limitations
on free expression and access to
information undermine the potential
for the inclusive political dialogue
needed to understand protesters
grievances, let alone address them.
Ethiopian security forces have killed
more than 400 protesters and others,
and arrested tens of thousands more
during widespread protests in the
Oromia region since November
2015.
Ethiopias government has shown
little willingness to engage in
meaningful reforms over the last
year, choosing brutal force over
discussion. Its clear this approach
hasnt worked as the brutality of
security forces increased, so too has
the intensity of protests and the calls
for reform. Moderate voiceshave
been jailed, and outlets for peaceful
expression of grievances shuttered.
The government says it is responding
to the needs of the people, and has
removed key regional government
officials from their posts, shuffled
cabinet positions, and stated a
commitment
to
proportional
representation. But these changes fall
dramatically short of the protesters
demands for reform. Meti and all
Ethiopians have a right to criticize
government
policies
without
fear of reprisals, but justice and
accountability for people like Metis
family arent even talking points on
the agenda yet.
The Ethiopian government and its
international allies should refocus
attention on the need for justice,
accountability, and meaningful
reform or next years anniversary
will be even less hopeful.

No government that kills its own

citizens should be treated as a friend
On November 11, 2016, Canadian
Global Affairs Minister, the Honorable
Stephan Dion visited Ethiopia. During
his stay in Addis Ababa, as diplomatic
ethos dictate, he met with the Minister
of Foreign Affairs and the Prime
Minister of Ethiopia.

It is reported that on his meeting with

both, Mr. Dion reiterated his concerns
over the deaths and violence arising
from the recent unrest, particularly
in the Oromia and Amhara regions,
and underscored his support for all
Ethiopians to engage in a peaceful and
inclusive dialogue.
During the meeting with Prime
Minister
Hailemariam
Desalegn,
Minister Dion addressed the current
state of emergency and the critical
importance of undertaking timely and
meaningful reforms for the benefit of
all Ethiopiansparticularly its youth
in support of the countrys growth and
prosperity.
It was also reported that the Minister
conducted an in-depth exchange
with civil society representatives,
highlighting the need for democratic
space, pluralism and respect of
fundamental freedoms for any political
dialogue to be successful. Minister Dion
carried those messages into his meetings
with the Ethiopian government.
SOCEPP Canada appreciates Minister
Dions expression of concern with
regard to the repression in Ethiopia.
However, we would like to stress that
for the most part of the last 25 years,
Canada has expressed similar concerns
over the atrocities of the Ethiopian
government with no positive outcome.
Despite paying lip service to the donor
community, the Ethiopian government
has shown no tangible progress with
regard to upholding human rights, or
opening the political space and ensuring
democratic rights or initiating a national
dialogue that could work towards

consensus and inclusiveness.

On the contrary, as documented
by Human Rights Watch, Amnesty
International etc, at this point, Ethiopia
is governed by one of the most
repressive regimes in the entire Africa.
Therefore, words alone are not enough;
Canada is a major donor to Ethiopia
and Canadian tax payers expect their
government to do more. Canada
should work with other allies in the
international community to hold the
leaders of the Ethiopian government
accountable for their criminal actions,
such as mass killings, torture and
incarcerations and massive corruptions.
Canada could spearhead targeted
economic sanctions, travel ban, bank
account freeze and laying human rights
violation charges at ICC against top
officials and families of the Ethiopian
government.
No government that has killed over
1000 of its citizens in one year should
continue to be treated as a friend. No
business as usual with a government that
has committed massive human rights
violations and concocted notorious laws
to cripple civil liberties and democratic
rights. Such governments should not
be supported in any form or shape. A
government that has admitted to have
imprisoned over 11, 000 of its citizens
for political reason should be held
accountable.
We call upon Canada and the donor
community to demand the Ethiopian
government to immediately release
political prisoners, lift the draconian
state of emergency and open an all
inclusive political dialogue to resolve
the political future of the country.

The TPLF Goal Dividing and Colonizing Ethiopia

Mr. Obang Metho

(By Obang Metho)
The TPLF Carried Out the Goal of Dividing
and Finally Internally Colonizing Ethiopia
Where the Italians Failed: What Can Each
of Us Do to Reclaim Our Independence and
Avoid Destruction and the Disintegration of
Ethiopia?
Dear Fellow Ethiopian Brothers and Sisters,
.I am writing this letter to each and every
one of you about the current issues of great
concern facing us in Ethiopia. In this case,
it is NOT about the state of emergency, nor
is it about the TPLF; instead, it is about
us, the individual people of Ethiopia who
care about the well being of our people and
nation.
Im the Executive Director SMNE (http://
www.solidaritymovement.org)
a
nonviolent, non-political, grassroots social
justice movement representing the diverse
people of Ethiopia. The SMNE is committed
to bringing truth, justice, freedom, equality,
reconciliation,
accountability,
respect
for human and civil rights and economic
prosperity to the people of Ethiopia. I speak
to you as someone who, like you, has a
stake in the future of Ethiopia. Despite all
the distractions in our lives, as well as daily
news reports about what the TPLF/EPRDF
have done, I cannot be silent about the
responsibility we each have to bring about
the best outcome for our country during this
time of such great risk to our country.
Can each of us take responsibility to show
self-control and restraint at a time where
an emotional eruption of aggression could
ignite a series of reactions that explode out
of control? I call on Ethiopians to remain
calm so we do not sacrifice our moral high
ground and the larger issues at hand in
exchange for the short-lived satisfaction
of anger, vengeance or destruction that
backfires and undermines our larger, more
important goals. Please remember, the
distance between aggressors and victims
becomes less as victims retaliate without
regard for what is right and wrong. How
then are we different from those we blame
for harms done to us?
The journey we are on as Ethiopians is
together. For the sake of the country and for
the sake of the 100,000,000 million lives,
we are at a critical moment with much at
stake. If we choose violence and destruction,
we all could lose much more than we can
imagine both personally and as a nation.
Such violence could also cause us to lose our
legitimacy as a movement for freedom and
justice, to the benefit of the TPLF/EPRDF,
and in doing so, we could lose sight of who
we are as people.
The main audience I seek to reach today is
the individual person not the leaders, not
ethnic groups, not political groups or other
organizations; it is about you, your family,
your children, your community, your ethnic
group, your descendants and your country.
Individual choices make a difference.
The current ethnic apartheid regime of the
TPLF cares about itself; but, they have
failed in their responsibility to the people
of Ethiopia. They want to milk the cow but

not feed it. How can we pull together to be

different? Our history gives examples of
overcoming threats from outside enemies,
like when Italy sought to colonize Ethiopia;
but now, we face inner threats from our
own people. The TPLF are us, but they do
not accept the rest of us as part of them.
However, others from within Ethiopia,
just like the TPLF, are also threatening
our destruction. At the same time, they are
also excluding the majority of people as
they instead pursue their own goals and
ambitions for power.
Is this where we want to go as a people? Do
Ethiopians want to support the disintegration
of their own country? What would be the
purpose of it? Could we ever replace the
lives lost, the suffering of the vulnerable,
the lost generation of children disrupted and
displaced, the destruction of infrastructure
and the trauma and reaction of many, all
leading to a cycle of retaliation in the next
generation? Who are we to be as people?
How can we stand up for what is right?
For Ethiopians to bring more sustainable
change to Ethiopia that will benefit the
people without regard to ethnicity, religion,
political view, gender, region or other
differences Putting humanity before any
other distinction we must uphold, by
law and practice, the value of every life.
To assure ones own freedom and justice,
we must uphold the freedom and justice of
others, again, without regard to being part
of a certain preferred ethnocentric group
for no one will be free until all are free.
However, some want to block this from
happening.
If the TPLF can be accused of being
ethnocentric; how about others who agree
with them? How can we respond when
another ethnocentric group claims: What
we need now is not the democratization of
Ethiopia but the disintegration of Ethiopia?
This kind of thinking is what is a threat to
each of us, to our families, communities,
ethnic groups descendants and nation.
It must be confronted, condemned and
challenged. Also, it must be done in a
peaceful and respectful way; not forgetting
that one person from an ethnic group is an
individual and cannot necessarily speak for
the entire group. Many others within the
same ethnic group will vehemently disagree
with others from within their own groups.
Where do you stand? This is why I am
sending this open letter. We need to think
and discuss these issues.
Let us reflect more deeply on the history
of Ethiopia. On two different occasions,
we were challenged by Italians. They were
humiliated following their first defeat at
Adwa in 1896; especially because they
thought they would easily overpower
the lesser forces of Ethiopia. The
embarrassment from that failure fueled
another attempt during the years 1935 to
1941 when the Italian fascist forces tried
to finish the job of the colonization of
Ethiopia. Again, they were defeated. One
of the reasons why they lost was because
Ethiopians came together with a common

vision and agenda. The Italians tried to

defeat Ethiopia by dividing the Amhara from
the Oromo. Does this sound familiar? These
foreigners almost succeeded, but thanks
to some who spoke out, many Ethiopians
began to see through the deception and
manipulation.
Look at this explanation as told in an
interview with Jagama Kello, a hero of
courage in the struggle, relayed by Ewnetu
Sime in an article celebrating Ethiopian
Patriots:
Jagama explained why the Italian was
not successful to instigate Oromo against
Amhara resident in his area. He said that
his uncle convinced the locals Oromo not
to listen the enemy propaganda by telling
them with very interesting example. The
uncle told the people: here is grain of white
Teff and black Teff and mix up. Once it is
mixed up we cannot separate them back to
white and black teff. Oromo and Amhara
people lived together for generations. As we
are not able to separate the sergegh grain,
we cannot separate Amhara from Oromo.
He told them we are one untied Ethiopian.
His explanations were very effective, and
prevented the killings. Jagama is an Oromo
origin but understood the true meaning of
Ethiopianess. He served Ethiopias best
interest as an Ethiopian hero. He gave
unquestionable sacrifice for freedom,
national unity and integrity of Ethiopia.
This gracious man has demonstrated a
true nationalist stand. He believed that
Ethiopianet is first and other things such as
birth or buried places or languages are all a
coincidence for him.
On the other hand, the Italians were successful
in finding collaborators or traitors through
money and the lure of power and ambition.
Among them, allegedly, were the parent(s)
of some of the members of TPLF Central
Committee according to Gebremedhim
Araya, in his article: Who were they then?
Who are they now? Essentially, the fascist
colonization of Ethiopia has been achieved
by the children of these Italian traitors. What
the Italians failed to do, the TPLF finished.
Bribes and privileges have bought new
traitors of today. The pursuit of dishonest
gain and ambition for power and privilege
has been realized for those willing to be part
of it.
The same tactics of divide and conquer,
particularly in regard to the Amhara and
Oromo are also obviously being carried
out as modeled by the Italians of the past.
Will the Amhara and Oromo fall for it this
time? Getachew Reda, Ethiopian Minister
of Communication recently said the Amhara
and Oromo will never be unified because
they are like hay and fire, but that is
what he hopes. Instead, are the Amhara and
Oromo of today more like the mix of white
and black Teff Jamaga describes that brought
them into the unified front that defeated the
invasion by the Italians?
Both the Italians and the TPLF have used
collaborators and fomented division to
attempt to achieve the internal colonization
of Ethiopia. Are we smart and perceptive
enough to see what is happening now? Or,
are we so ambitious for our own ethnic
group or for our own personal power that we
try to take captive our ethnic groups so as
to support ethnocentrism for ourselves once
again?
What was the effect on the children of
Italian traitors after their betrayal of
Ethiopia failed? Was there a way for the
children of the next generation to recover?
There may have been legitimate grievances
rather than pure opportunism; yet, the
shame that followed may have been deep
and unbearable, creating an incentive to
blame and hate everything Ethiopian.
and actively try to destroy it. Were whole
groups of people punished for the actions
of the collaborators? Is there a deep wound
and bitterness that has never been resolved
through reconciliation? Is it time to do that
now? We also must be cautious not to fall

into the traps laid by the hurts, wounds,

prejudices, punitive marginalization and
justifications of our past so the past does
not control the present; because if it does,
the present decision will be burdened with
baggage from the past, affecting our future.
Get it?
Is the present TPLF Central Committee,
along with others, finishing the job
for their fathers in retaliation for the
condemnation of others? Is the pursuit of
wealth without regard to ones conscience
a means of diversion and escape from the
intergenerational shame and burden of the
past? This burden must be lifted. It is now
2016, NOT 1896 or 1936. There is a way
to come together as one people, the people
of Ethiopia to forgive and reconcile.
However, it is NOT through the destruction
and disintegration of our beloved country!
Furthermore, the descendants of these
collaborators or traitors are not the only ones
facing intergenerational burdens, wounds,
failures, grudges, bitterness and mistakes of
the past that need healing, forgiveness and
reconciliation. There are many more of us
around from different ethnic and religious
groups who need the same. We cannot
boast, but instead, we must show humility
and a willingness to come together for the
betterment all.
The challenge before us is huge and cannot
be resolved with uncontrolled emotion, but
requires patience, determination, wisdom,
and a willingness to reach out to others.
It requires sophistication and sacrifice for
the greater good of all. Especially now, if
we follow the impulse of emotions rather
than a reasonable and larger viewpoint, we
may choose to follow the model of Syria,
Yemen and Libya. This is where the country
is heading unless we are careful and take
concrete and decisive action to right the
wrongs and to not make new mistakes.
The people should determine what kind
of government they want, reclaiming their
independence, rather than have internal or
external opportunistic forces influence our
decisions so we forsake the best for our
future. Some may initially feel the anger that
drives us to repeat the past, but we should not
settle for that. No way does Ethiopia need
another ethnocentric or dictatorial regime.
Ethiopians should raise high the banner of
principles. We should unite around common
values, condemn the violence, and make sure
no other ethnocentric group or dictatorship
climbs to power to assert a claim that it is
our turn to eat. Ethnic policies isolate
people; just look at our current dilemma.
Ethiopia needs nothing less than a country
founded on universal principles that respect
the well being of all. Our people have the
responsibility to reject the ideas of those
promoting destruction, a narrow ethniccentric solution, division of the people and
opportunistic power grabs by persons or
groups. You must decide. We have to create
the structure to make it happenbuilding
institutions and supporting a leadership that
is grounded on principles.
I call on Ethiopians to come out from
wherever you are to be part of a movement
for the people, by the people and of the
people. Say no to anyone who wants to
recycle Italian tactics or to a one tribe take
all power structure. These are defeating and
dividing us from the inside and must stop.
Join the movement. Worrying and not doing
anything is not good enough. Claiming you
love Ethiopia and not doing anything to stop
the threat is not enough.
Ethiopia is in a critical state and must
confront the threat of inside destruction.
We will rot from the inside out if we do not
rise above destructive, self-centered politics
to embrace the rights, dignity and worth of
others. These are God-given values that will
reap more than we can imagine in bringing
about a healthier, more free, more just, more
life-affirming and more prosperous Ethiopia
for all that we can proudly pass on to future
generations.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Written by Christian Nordqvist

Acupuncture originates from China and
has been practiced there for thousands of
years. Although there are records of acupuncture being used hundreds of years ago
in Europe, it was during the second half
of the twentieth century it began to spread
rapidly in Western Europe, the United
States and Canada.
Acupuncture involves the insertion of very
thin needles through the patient's skin at
specific points on the body - the needles
are inserted to various depths. The medical
community is not in conclusive agreement
about how acupuncture works scientifically. However, we do know that it does have
some therapeutic benefits, including pain
relief and alleviation from nausea caused
by chemotherapy.
According to traditional Chinese medical
theory, acupuncture points are located on
meridians through which gi vital energy
runs. There is no histological, anatomical
or scientific proof that these meridians or
acupuncture points exist. Acupuncture remains controversial among Western medical doctors and scientists.
Creating case studies that use proper scientific controls is difficult because of the
invasive nature of acupuncture - a clinical

study involves a placebo (sham product)

compared to the targeted treatment. It is
very hard to devise a sham acupuncture
control that one can compare to proper
acupuncture. While some studies have
concluded that acupuncture offers similar
benefits to a patient as a placebo, others
have indicated that there are some real benefits. This article in a peer-reviewed British
Medical Journal explains that the principles of acupuncture are firmly grounded in
science, and you don't need Chinese philosophy either to make it work, or to practice it.
According to WHO (World Health Organization) acupuncture is effective for treating
28 conditions, while evidence indicates it
may have an effective therapeutic value for
many more. People with tension headaches
and/or migraines may find acupuncture to
be very effective in alleviating their symptoms, according to a study carried out at the
Technical University of Munich, Germany.
Another study at The University of Texas
M. D. Anderson Cancer Center found that
twice weekly acupuncture treatments relieve debilitating symptoms of xerostomia
- severe dry mouth - among patients treated
with radiation for head and neck cancer.

Along with Greek, Hebrew and Arabic,
Ethiopias Geez is considered one of the

youve probably never heard of it.
Michael Gervers, a professor in the
department of historical and cultural
studies at the University of Toronto,
believes its important to resurrect it.
The entire history of Ethiopia is in this
language, he says. Everything written
up until 1850 was written in Geez, so
we have 2,000 years of textual material
that people dont have access to. It was
replaced by Amharic as Ethiopias official

In 2015, Gervers started a fund to create
an Ethiopian studies program at U of T,
setting a goal of $200,000 and donating
$50,000 of his own money. The deans

starting in January, making it the first

Gervers believes Ethiopia has been
ignored due to a European influence on
academics. Since the country was never
colonized (except for a brief occupation
by Mussolinis fascists) not many people
know of its original language. It was
