The job posting that I found intriguing is at the Anderson Center for Autism in
Staatsburg, NY where a Special Education teacher position is currently available. According to
the posting, the candidate will be expected to develop, conduct and maintain ongoing educational
programs at the school and in the classroom to assist with student and family supports. The
special education teacher is also responsible for being the head collaborator by leading the
professional teams, facilitating the discussions at IEP meetings, and providing opportunities to
discuss information about outside agencies as well as connecting these services into the
classroom curriculum. The teacher will also provide supervision, guidance, and instruction to all
of the teacher aides.
The special education teacher will be responsible for many tasks, roles, and
responsibilities that require communication and collaboration. Not only will the position require
the teacher to lead meetings, develop and conduct specialized programs for the children and their
families, and supervise the teacher aides, there are several other roles for this position. These
tasks include creating individualized assessments both formal and informal along with
developing specific educational goals and interventions. These will be discussed and agreed
upon in IEP and other less formal meetings with the families and professional staff involved.
I would share if interviewed that I am new to this particular realm of special education
and have not had a lot of exposure to autistic children, but have a great interest in learning more
about it and the programs that are essential for providing access and support for children and
their families. I would offer my strengths by asserting that I am a positive and effective
communicator, have had plenty of experience working with students and families, and listen and

stimulate proactive communication in teams with all stakeholders contributing to make the most
out of meetings and the outcomes fair and obtainable.
