[edit] History
Hamleys is named after William Hamley, who founded a toy shop called "Noah's Ark" at 231 High
Holborn in London in 1760. A branch at 200 Regent Street was opened in 1881, and the Holborn
branch was destroyed by fire in 1901 and was relocated from 231 to 86 87 High Holborn.[5]
In 1938, Queen Mary, consort of George V of the United Kingdom, gave Hamleys a Royal Warrant.
During World War II, the Regent Street store was bombed five times. In 1955 Queen Elizabeth II of the
United Kingdom gave the company a second Royal Warrant as a "Toys and Sports Merchant".[5]

Hamleys moved its flagship store to its current address at 188196 Regent Street in 1981, which is the
largest toy shop in the world.
Hamleys flagship London store has seven floors covering 54,000 square feet (5,000 m2),[6] all devoted
to playthings, with different categories of toy on each floor. In the late 1990s, Hamleys opened a
specific Spice Girls department dedicating their aisles to everything from Spice Girls stationery to
Spice Girls Dolls. The ground floor is traditionally for soft toys (including Steiff), and decked out with
a remarkably diverse array of stuffed animals, from regular teddy bears to more exotic plushes such as
turtles and dolphins, even to enormous life-sized giraffes and elephants.
5th floor: Boys Action figures, vehicles, and an open cafe.
4th floor: Hobbies Model kits, remote-controlled vehicles, model railways, Scalextric, etc.
3rd floor: Girls Dolls, Arts & Crafts, Hello Kitty, Dress up etc.
2nd floor: Preschool Toys for young children.
1st floor: Games Board games, science, jigsaws; also a Build-A-Bear Workshop and Sweet
Shop.
Ground floor: Soft toys a wide variety of stuffed animals, and also a Marvin's Magic
section.
Basement: Interactive Lego, construction toys, Red 5, novelties and GAME (retailer).

[edit] Other UK Locations

In 1987 a second store was opened in New York, however this was closed less than 12 months later.[7]
Hamleys had a store based in Sheffield towards the end of the late 1980s. Based in part of the old
Robert Brothers Department Store that closed earlier in the 1980s, its address was 3638 The Moor,
Rockingham House, Sheffield. It closed after a few years due to high rates and lower than expected
trade. Hamleys is also a holding company for several other toy companies in the United Kingdom.
Most notably, Hamleys purchased The English Teddy Bear Company in 2004. Originally established by
Dominic Richards, it failed to prove a success for Hamleys, and all eight stores were closed down
within two years.
As a result of these large expansion failures under the previous management team, Hamleys most
successful expansion efforts have been through running concession outlets at various UK airports.
Hamleys run smaller stores in London Heathrow Airport (Terminals 1), London Stansted Airport,
London Gatwick Airport (North Terminal) and Manchester Airport (Terminal 2). There is also a small
store at St Pancras railway station.
On November 26, 2009, Hamleys opened a store in Glasgow. The 30,000-square-foot (2,800 m2) outlet
is part of a 100 million extension and redevelopment of the St Enoch Shopping Centre.[8]
There was also an outlet store at Great Western Outlet Village in Swindon, offering a more limited
range of products. This outlet store was closed by mid-February 2010.

[edit] Global stores

Hamleys European footprint exists in Denmark (three small stores), and on 23 October 2008 it opened

a 3,250-square-metre (35,000 sq ft) store in Pembroke Avenue, located adjacent to Town Square,
Dundrum, Dublin in the Republic of Ireland.[1][9][10]
Hamleys opened its first store outside Europe in Amman, Jordan on 18 June 2008. The three-storey
store in Mecca Street is run by the group's franchisee Jordan Centre.[3] A Dubai franchise opened on 4
November 2008.[2]
Hamleys opened its first store in Asia in Mumbai, India on the 8th of April, 2010.[6] The 22,000square-foot (2,000 m2) store is located in an upmarket shopping district in the country's financial
capital.

[edit] Future expansion

Hamleys plans to open additional franchise stores in China, Turkey and Serbia (October 2010).

Reliance Retail of Mukesh Ambani has planned to invest Rs 120 crore to open 20 toy stores of UKbased Hamleys in India, an official of the company has said on Thursday, Jan 27. The company's plan
is to open the 20 stores over a period of sever years. Reliance Retail today inaugurated its second
Hamleys toy store at Express Avenue mall in Chennai.
Exprecing a strong market for toy in India, Hamleys has tied up with Reliance Retail for marketing its
children's toys."Our first store in Mumbai which is spread across 21,000 square foot has got a very
good response. It was a pilot store. Now this is a large store.
With this we have plan to open 18 stores in India over the next seven years", Reliance Retail president
and Chief Executive Officer Bijou Kurien told mediapersons.
Hamleys, as part of its expansion, will open 18 more stores in India over the the 'Pilot Store-Large
store' strategy. It has estimated a requirement of Rs 120 crore for opening the 18 stores, to be spread
over 11,000 square foot and 21,000 square foot, Kurien said.

The world famous toy store will begin a roll-out of at least 20 stores in India, two years earlier than
initially planned.
Times may be hard for retailers in the West, but for the last few years, Asias growing wealth has been
telling a different story. Now the continents third-largest economy, India is next on the hit list for
retailers looking for growth away from the debt-stricken economies of Europe and the States.
Sudhir Pai, senior vice-president at Reliance Retail, Hamleys partner in India, said the group is
looking to boost its presence in India two years earlier than originally planned, with twenty stores in the

country by 2016.
Following the initial opening of Hamleys in Mumbai last year, the toy seller followed with a second in
the southern city of Madras, and will is preparing for an outlet in Delhi by February 2012.
We want to expand much faster than what was in our contractual arrangement because the response
has been so encouraging, Pai said, claiming that Hamleys Indian operation could soon be larger than
the rest of the group. All of our stores put together could end up being bigger than the franchisee.
Up for discussion now are sites in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune. Additional outlets in Mumbai and
Delhi are also being considered.

While the store has so much on offer; to the point where youre almost giddy from choice, the one area
that had me morph right back into a 6 year old was the princess and Barbie zone complete with a makeover area. Where were these until now? Our 3 year old also got caught up in his mothers Barbie
enthusiasm with a dramatic Oh my gosh! on viewing the range of beauties (much to the displeasure of
his grandfather who immediately directed little boy to the boy toys).
Theres something exciting for every age and all the toys conform to EU safety standards, so yes you
do pay a price for the good stuff from Hasbro, Lego, Fisher-Price, Disney, Mattel and more. Theres
also a special Thomas the Engine area, a Kodak instant image zone, a candy stall and the red bus bang

Hamleys, a 250 year-old toy retailer of the UK, on Thursday opened its first store in Mumbai in a
franchise agreement with Reliance Retail, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Reliance Industries. The
tie-up is valid for 20 years. The company plans to invest Rs 150 crore in the next seven years to set up
20 more stores across the country, including tier-II cities.
The size of the Mumbai store is around 21,000 square feet, while the one being opened in Chennai

within six months will be close to 10,000 sqft, according to Bijou Kurien, president and chief executive
officer, Reliance Lifestyle division. The Indian division of Hamleys, though, is going to be headed by
Sudhir Pai.
Hamleys is based in London and is one of the worlds largest toy companies. Its flagship store located
at the Regent Street is a five-storey building spread over 54,000 sqft. It is considered one of Londons
major tourist attractions.
The first store has seen an investment of Rs 6 crore. Kurien explains that the investment has been
significant as far as setting up this store is concerned. The hard investment for the stores in terms of
occupying retail space is going to be made by Reliance Retail. As for the soft investment in terms of
store design and staff training, it will be done by Hamleys.
Reliance Retail in 2008 had said it was in talks with the UK toy retailer. The reason for the delay, as

Moreover, the company is also looking at spending around Rs 50 lakh on advertisement for the first

The total organised toy market is India is around Rs 1500 crore. It caters to about 30 crore kids upto 15
years of age. Reliance Retail will be looking to have a sizeable share in it.
The firm will open 20 stores in India over the next six to seven years in partnership with Reliance
Retail, which has a 20-year-franchise agreement with Hamleys.
Hamleys will invest around Rs1.25bn (18.3m) in the scheme and will open its next store in Chennai in
the next few months, having already opened a 21,000 square feet store in Mumbai.
The organised retail toy market in the country is close to Rs15bn (220.5m) and Reliance Retail will
be looking to have a sizeable share in it, Bijou Kurien, president and chief executive lifestyle,
Reliance Retail, commented.
Reliance Retail will stock Hamleys merchandise, but also products that are exclusively available to the
UK retailer.
Apart from stocking Hamleys merchandise, Reliance Retail will stock products that are exclusively
available to the UK retailer. Other global brands from companies such as Mattel and Funskool will also
be available at these outlets.
