In the short story Tell Tale Heart, Edgar Allan Poe creates suspense in the scene

before the narrator kills the old man. For example, Poe uses vivid words to describe dramatic
sights. He writes, And now at the dead hour of the night, amid the dreadful silence of that old
house, so strange a noise as this excited me. (Page 85) This scene shows vivid words to
describe the scene because he uses vivid words to describe where he is and what is
happening. He is talking about how this all excites him. Poe also uses the technique of
describing a character's fear or anxiety. He writes, It was the beating of the old mans heart. It
increased my fury, as the beating of a drum stimulates the soldier into courage.(Page 85) This
creates suspense because it shows that the narrator is starting to become overwhelmed, and is
starting to get ready for the kill. He is starting to get mad, and is a bit anxious because he has
been waiting a long time to get the chance to rid of the evil eye. In conclusion, Poe uses vivid
words, and describes the characters fear and anxiety to create suspense in Tell Tale Heart.
