Principal Moderator guidance Awarding coursework marks

In this module we will look at the process of marking coursework using the
assessment criteria in the syllabus.
The assessment criteria list levels or bands of achievement, each of which contains
a carefully worded description. Using these level descriptions correctly is essential
when marking.
When marking coursework, you will need to look for key words in the descriptions to
help you place responses in the right level. For example, coursework which
`consistently displays an `excellent understanding of the coursework requirements
would be at a higher level than coursework where the learner `regularly or `often
demonstrates a `reasonable understanding. Coursework of a lower level may only
`sometimes or `occasionally show a `limited understanding of the coursework
requirements.
Once you have decided on the level that you intend to put the coursework into, youll
need to decide which mark to award it. To do this you need to decide how far it fulfils
all the requirements of the level.
Where you are confident that the coursework fulfils all the level requirements well,
you should first check that it is not at the bottom of the level above. If this isnt the
case, you should award it a mark at the top of the level you have chosen.
However, if you feel that a level requirement is not well covered in the assignment,
you may think about awarding it a mark lower in the level. So you must look for
where the coursework fits best in the level to decide which mark to award.
