The report was amended in 1914 and adopted by the Associ tion in 1915. Revisions were adopted in 1917. Additional revisions were submited by the Committee on Field Practice and adopted in 126, 1927, 1931, 1938 (included action by the NEPA Board of Directors), 194, and 1945, The Committee on Sundpipes recommenced revisions adopted in 1949, 1952, 1963, 1968, 1960, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1978, 1980, 1982, 1985, and 1990, ‘The 1993 edition of NFPA Hf was a complete reorginization of the doasment. The “wer Aicnaliness” of NFPA LA was evaluated, and numerous changes followed, The standard was at ranged to provide fora logical sytem designapproxich where designingand instalinga aandpipe system. Substantive changes to the 1993 edition were the result of experience with standpipe systems under fie conditions, Flow rites, pressures, and the specific location of the hove connections were studied to determine optimum combinations for each factor ‘The 1996 edition of NFPA 14 was a continuation of the changes that were initiated for the 1998 edition, Some definitions were expanded, and certain requirements for piping materi- als, pipe support, witeiflow alarms, valves, ire department connections, system testing, and \watersupplies wererevised. In addition, number of editorial changes were made toimprove the user ficndliness of the document, ‘The 2000 edition of NFPA 14 incorporated requirements for hydrants, hose houses, and master streams previously contained in NFPA 24, Standard for the Installation of Private Fire Senace Mains and Their Appurtenancet. Also included in this vision were test procedures for fire flow testing and marking of hydrants previously contained in NFPA 201, Recommended Practice for Fie Po Testing and Marking of Pydants, ‘The 2008 edition was reformatted to conform to the Manual af Sle for NFPA Technical Commitee Documents, 200 edition. Hydraulic calculation requirements were rewritten for clatification, and requirements for horizontal standpipes were added, Guidance for hydrants, hhoe houses, and master streams were deleted as this information was retained by NFPA 13, tandari for the Instalation of Sprinkler Systems, and NEPA, Standard forthe Installation of Private Fire Semice Mains and Their Appurtenance. Similarly, test procedures for fre flow testing and marking of hydrants were retumed to NFPA 201, Recommended Practice for Fir Flo Testing and Masking of Hydvants thus “private hydrant” was removed from the title of NFPA 14. ‘The 2007 edition included guidance on the use of pressure-regulating devices and roof ‘outlets for standpipe systems. Related information wis extracted from NFPA 13, Standard Jor the Installation of Sprinkler Systems, to assist the user in applications involving combined sprinkler /standpipe systems ‘The 2010 edition of NFPA 14 now permits express mains supplying higher zone standpipes to be designed with pressures in excess of 350 psi (21 bar), The requirements for stand pe system zones have been extensively revieed forclarfication, The requirements or pipe sched tle design have been deleted, and all sandpipe systemsare now required to be hydraulically calculated. The requirements to balance hydraulic junction points have been deleted. New requirementshave been added to address standpipe systems risers that terminate at different oor levels. new definition for horizontal standpipe as been added. NFPA 600, Standard on Indudrial Fie Bhigades, and the Fire Equipment Manufacturers Association (FEMA) are resources for taining of personnel AAI The use of standard-vcight valves and fiings ordi natily should be confined to the upper stories of very high buildings and to equipment in which the highest available pressures are less than 175 psi (12.1 bar) AAA1.2 Some steel piping material haying leser wall thick: ress than specified in 111.12 has been listed for use in sprin- er systems where joined with threaded connections, The ser tice life of such products can be significantly less than that of Schedule 40 stcel pipe, and it should be determined if this service life will be sufficient for the application intended, Al such threads should be checked by the installer using working ring gauiges conforming to the “Basic Dimensions of Ring Gauges for USA (American) Standard Taper Pipe ‘Threads, NPT,’ as per Table 8 of ASME BI.20.1, Pipe Threats, General Purpose (inch). [131 485.12] A44.2.2 Cutting and welding operations account for 4 per ‘cent offires cach yearin nonresidential propertics and 8 per cent in industrial and manufacturing properties, Implace ‘welding of standpipe piping introduces & significant fizard that can normally be avoided by shop-velding the piping and installing the welded sections with mechanical tings. As a result, the standard requires that all piping be shopavelded, When such situations cannot be avoided, the exceptions out line procedures and practices that minimize the increase in Iazate (See FigureAt 4.2.2.) A44.23.1 Listed, shaped, and contoured nipples meet the ‘definition of fabricated fitings. (18:4.6.52.3.1] A442. (3: A65241) AAA242 The preparation of mating surfaces is important to the proper fabrication of a weld joint. The mating surfaces for a circumferential butt weld joint should be prepared and configured so that a full penctration weld is achievable, alk though a partial penctration weld is acceptable. Hose stations should be so arranged as o allow die. charge to be directed from the nozzle into all portions of im- portant enclosures such as closets and similar enclosures A.L5. Fire department connections feeding interconnected standpipes, including combined systems, should be arranged to supply all interconnected stanepipes in a building or sec- tion of a building. See Figure A.7.1(a), Figure A7.1(b), and Figure A7.1(c). Interwonnection should oceur as close to the source of supply{ies) as possible. ‘Standpipesystemsin separate buildings or structures fed by the sume witer supply are not required to be interconnected, For example, a building might have an automaticwet stand pipe system’ while an adjacent parking garage has an automaticly standpipe system fed by the sime fire pump and water main, These two standpipe systems are not required to bbe interconnected since they protect different structures, AZL8 Where determining the pressure at the outlet of the emote hose connection, the pressure loss in the hose valve should be considered, his very important that fire departments choose an appro- priate novile type for their standpipe fire-fighting operations, Constant pressure (automatic) ype spray nozzles (we NFPA 1964, Sandard for Spray Nossles) should not be used for standpipe operations because many of these types require tminimum of 100 pi (6. bar) of pressure atthe nozzle inet to produce reasonably elfective fre stream. In standpipe oper tions, hose fiction lors could prevent the delivery of 1H) psi (629 bar) to the nozzle. In high-tse standpipe systems with pressure-reducing hose salves, the fire depattment as little or no control over hose valve outlet pressure. Many fire departments use combination (fog and straight stream) nozaes requiring 100 psi (64) bar) residual pressure atthe nozzle inlet with in, D4in,,or Qin.
