UNIVERSITY OF TOKYO - LLM

The master's degree is normally awarded to a student if he/she has satisfied the following
requirements: at least two years in residence in the master's program; acquisition of the
course credits required by the Graduate Schools for Law and Politics, an acceptable master's
thesis written under the guidance of a faculty member; and passing the final comprehensive
examination.
NYU LAW - LLM
The Graduate Division's distinguished history reaches back to the 1890s, when the Law
School began awarding the LLM degree, and includes the 1945 founding of the oldest and
most prestigious graduate tax program in the country.
Our Graduate Divisionone of the largest and most diverse in the nationoffers nine
different full-time LLM degrees: A traditional LLM program, and eight specialized ones. In the
traditional program, students shape a course of study to meet their own objectives. In the
specialized programs, they pursue most of their coursework in one area, with some flexibility
to take classes in other areas of interest.
The traditional LLM degree is designed for students who wish to take full advantage of NYUs
extraordinarily wide range of course offerings and the diverse research interests of our
faculty. Unlike students in the specialized LLM programs, candidates pursuing the traditional
LLM degree are not limited to a specific number of classes in one field, and they have the
freedom to choose courses that match their interests. But this does not mean that they need
to abandon their specialized interests in corporate, international, trade or other fields. For
instance, those pursuing the traditional masters can still take a good number of international
classes while focusing their studies in other areas. Students also have the option of
expanding a typical research assignment into a masters thesis, culminating their training with
a significant scholarly work.
Our professors challenge students to explore different approaches to the very manner in
which law is conceived, legal process is perceived, and the world of legal practice is
understood. Traditional LLM students draw on truly remarkable curricular diversity.
