INTRODUCTION. This section describes the purpose of the Strobex, provides a general physical des- cription and lists physical _and functional characteristics, capabilities and features. 1.2, DESCRIPTION. The Model 135M-11 Strobex (see figure 1-1) (hereater referred to as the Strobex) is a lightweight, handheld strobe lamp. The point source flash tube has a highly concentrated light source, making viewing easy in bright sunlight. The beam _illu- minates retro-reflective targets on main rotor, to indicate rotor track, and on tail rotor, to measure clock angle. The Strobex is also used to measure pm of rotating components, LEADING PARTICULARS, See table 1-1 for Strobex leading particulars. Table 1-1. Determine Strobex configuration prior to calibration, testing, disassembly, repair or assembly in accordance with the following Paragraphs (for use up to Strobex serial number 8200). NOTE The serial number effectivity as. dis- cussed in the configuration history is identified, following each discussion, by numerals in brackets. 14 Manual No. 768-9075 (CHADWICK-HELMUTH May 6.1975. Product released to production. June_13,_1975. When tracking with one interrupter, the blades did not spread uniformly. D18 and D19 added to correct the problem, R18 was also added to improve settabilty of R19. (174) December 29, 1975. When $501 was switched from A to B or from D to © while the unit was running, a spike of current was drawn through $501. 0503 was added to correct this problem. At the same time R501 was added since 0503 defeated the safety bleed path through R5. R501 provides a safety bleed resistor for C502, (255) March 1, 1978. Added position E to $501 to provide for locking oscillator feature to work at higher RPM. 020 was added and rear panels were screened to show posi- tion E. (271) dune 25. 1976. Q1 and Q2 were changed from 2N5497 to 2N6292. 6292s are faster and run cooler, this allowed for the deletion of heat sinks from circuit board assembly. (836) duly 13.1976. Added K1 thermal circuit breaker to shut off unit in the event the trigger was held down at full power for more than five minutes. This eliminated the possibilty of thermal overload. (338) August 5.1976. RO was changed from 150K to 220K to bias D11 closer to the emitter current in Q3. This allowed the unit to calibrate easier at low RPMs. (353) November_22, 1976. 6 was changed from 10K 2 watt to 5K 5 watt. In cold weather, with $501 on position D or E and RPM dial tured near full clockwise, lamp would not flash until warmed up. Changing R& cured problem. (363) 12 February 81977. In manufacturing some SCRs (Q6) would disturb the operation of Q5 causing the oscillator to be difficult to calibrate. By replacing R8 (150 ohm) with C13 and adding D21 the problem was eliminated. (403) May_5, 1977. When balancing with the Strobex and used as phase measurement means, it was important that the RPM dial be tumed above 200 or the strobe would Rot flash fast enough to see the subject clearly. A third pole was added on the mode switch ($501) and R26 and R27 were added to switch in a voltage in place of the RPM potentiometer (R502) when mode switch is in position A. Thus the RPM dial setting no longer effects operation on "A. (412) ‘September 16, 1977. The one piece bakelite handle/switch assembly was no longer available from CutlerHammer. A three piece molded handle/trigger of Chadwick- Helmuth design is now used. This change required the hole pattern in the housing to change and a now bracket was \corporated to hold both the handle and the capacitors in place. (435) October 90, 1977, Input sensitivity was found to be not quite as good as the im- Proved Phazor. The strobes’ input sensitivity fo the magnetic pickup signal was improved by changing C11 from a 15 nanofarad capac- itor to a 22 nanofarad capacitor. (444) February 6, 1979. To improve light output and reflector durability we replaced the chrome-plated spun aluminum reflector with @ electro-deposited nickel rhodium plated reflector. As a consequence of this change the high voltage lead was rerouted around the reflector instead of through it and a Plate was added to hold the reflector in lace. (640) Manual No. 768-9075 CHADWICK-HELMUTH May 25. 1979, To make assembly and repair easier, captive studs were added to hold the ‘reflector and lens to the housing. (674) May 31, 1979. Bourns could not deliver the knob/pot_ used for R502 (RPM control) for six months, so they were replaced by a multiple source potentiometer and ten- tum dial made by Spectrol. This required a different hole pattern in the rear panel. (676) vJune_21, 1979. Ft was deleted. Field failures of FI were always accompanied by failure of Q1 and 2 which opened and prevented further damage. F1 was harder to find by field repair than the transistors. (683) ‘April 6.1980. Added an alternate pat for QS, A 2NGO2E will work in place of the MPU132 although the part must be reversed in the printed circuit board. (780) May 9, 1980. Main trigger switch $502 was a reliability problem and was changed to a military style switch made by Otto Controls that solved the problem. The mount- Ing plate for the switch in the handle had to be revised to make the hole larger to accommodate the new switch. (802) vanuary 20, 1984. Added op amp (Ut) to improve the accuracy and temperature stability of the oscillator for easier calibration and improved performance. This change liminated the matching of Q3 and D11 by eliminating D11. RO was also deleted. C14, R32, Q7, AS3, R31, R29 and R30 were added to support U1. (1751) March_6, 1985. F112 was changed from 100K fo 110K and R31 was changed from 20K to 50K. This further simplified calibration of the unit. (2204) April_18, 1985. After a number of trans- former (T101) failures in the field, it was found that under certain conditions Q1 and Q2 could fail short and not open to protect T101. This subjected T101 to thermal damage. As a result F1 was reinstalled in the circuit to correct the problem. (2243) October 30, 1985. Chadwick-Helmuth computerized manufacturing system could not accept reference designators longer than 4 characters. All the 1200 series reference designators were changed to 500 series. This section provides a general discussion of theory of operation, operating instructions and purpose of the Strobex. 4.2. THEORY OF OPERATION. The Strobex is used to illuminate retro- reflective targets attached to the main rotor andjor tail rotor. When used with the main rotor to view rotor track, the ‘Strobex illuminates targets attached to the tips of rotor blades. in this mode, the Strobex is triggered (caused to flash) by a signal from a Magnetic Pickup attached to the fixed swashplate and an Intetrupter or Interrupter Set attached to the rotating swashplate. When used with the tail rotor, the Strobex illuminates a target_on the blade arip. In this mode, the Strobex is triggered by a Velometer attached to, or near, the tail rotor gear box. This displays a clock angle which, when interpreted by a Balance Chart, tells where to change weight. The Strobex contains an adjustable free-running internal oscillator that can be set so that tail rotor track can be observed (no Magnetic Pickup is fitted to tail rotor). 4.3. STROBEX. The Strobex (see figures 4-1 and 4-2) has a trigger in a pistol grip handle for dc power switching, a S-position MODE switch, a high-intensity fiash tube and a 10-turn ‘pm dial to adjust flash rate. High-intensity flash tube V501 is fired, or triggered, from a Magnetic Pickup signs from a Velometer signal after processing by the Balancer, or from an intemal oscil- lator operating as a locking or free-running oscillator. As a locking oscillator, the frequency Is set to a desired repetition rate by the RPM dial and is locked in azimuth by a one-porrevolution signal from a Magnetic Pickup. As a free-running oscillator, frequency is set by RPM dial to trigger the flash tube at a desired repetition rate. The oscillator is comprised of transistors Q3 and Q4, programmable uunijunction transistor. Q5 and SCR Q6 located on circuit card At. When MODE switch is set to A, a Magnetic Pickup of Velometer signal from the Balancer is amplified by transistor Q4, and triggers transistor Q5 once for each input pulse. Q5 then triggers transistor 6 via Q7, which causes flash tube V501 to fire once for each input pulse. When MODE switch is set to B ot E, the oscillator is triggered by 4 and its frequency is controlled by RPM potentiometer and transistor G3. When MODE switch is set to C oF D, QS is a free-running oscillator controlled by RPM potentiometer and transistor Q3, SCR Q6 is triggered by Q7, and discharges capacitor C12 through the primary coll of the trigger transformer in the diode pack- age. C12 is charged to 270 vdc from the high voltage power supply through diode RB and resistor R6. A trigger transformer Manual No. 768-9075 CHADWICK-HELMUTH whe, ies? Lorn gia dim |] wor 704-98 Figure 4-1. Strobex Simplified Schematic Diagram steps up the trigger pulse from Q6 to -12 kV, which is applied to the cathode of flash tube V501. A series string of diodes is connected across the trigger transformer secondary coil, These diodes are reverse biased for negative trigger, but conduct ‘once the flash tube ionizes to provide a low impedance path for the main discharge current through the flash tube. 28 vde input power Is applied through the trigger (when squeezed) to transistors Q1 ‘and Q2 in the power supply oscillator, Qt, Q2 and the primary coil of transformer T101 is a square wave oscillator operating at 3.5 to 4.0 kHz, The square wave output from the secondary coil of T101 is rectified by rectifier bridge diodes D4 through D7 to a2 provide 270 vdc to the charging network and to Q6 in the flash tube trigger circuit. Resistors AZ and R28, diode CD10, and capacitor C5 provide +12 vdc to the amplifier and oscillator circuit. 43.1 Strobex Operating Modes. |. Mode A. The Strobex operates. in a slave mode when MODE switch is set to ‘A, flashing only when commanded by Balancer, and is usad primarily for main rotor tracking and tail rotor balancing’ of smaller rotor systems, (1) Magnetic Pickup Signal, For a two-bladed rotor the rotating swashplate is fitted with two Interrupters one of Manual No. 768-9075 CHADWICK-HELMUTH which is a double Interrupter, to_ satisfy Phazor requirements. When the Balancer FUNCTION switch is set to TRACK, the Strobex is triggered by the Interrupters, and flashes twice-per-revolution, illuminating each of the two blade tips when they pass in front of the helicopter. (The ‘Strobex will not recharge and flash twice for the double interrupter.) Therefore, two Tip Targets ate seen, superimposed, at the front of the helicopter. Since one Tip Target has a reflective horizontal bar, and the second target has a reflective vertical ber, judgement of track is made. The reflective targets face inboard so they are viewed from the cabin, either on the ground or in fight. 2) Velometer Signal. When a Velometer s secured to the tail rotor gear box and its cable connected to Channel A (or B) input of Balancer, and the Balancer FUNCTION switch is set to A (or B), Strobex will flash once-per-tevolution in response to the vibration signal induced by a high outof-balance rotor. When a Reflective Target, secured to the rotor hub, is Viewed from a distance with the Strobex, the target will appear stopped at some angle. This is the clock angle to be entered on the Balance Chart and will then tell where to change weight to the rotor. b, Mode B. When MODE switch is set to 8, Strobex is used for main rotor tracking where a higher intensity light is required. Locking oscillator of Mode B is used for larger rotors of three or more blades. In those cases, only one single interrupter is secured to the rotating swashplate. The Magnetic Pickup pulse causes the Strobex to flash once-per-revolution, and the osci- lator causes the Strobex to flash for other blades. By fine adjustment of the Strobex RPM potentiometer, blades may be brought together or spread for easy resolution. (When applied to two blade rotor systems where two Interrupters are installed onthe swashplate, Mode B is used for its greater light output) Oscillator rate is set by rpm potentiometer to flash the Sirobex at a rate slightly slower than blade rate {in accordance with formula on the back of the Strobex; mpm = blade rate X 0.4) and the interrupter triggers the oscillator. In this case, targets cannot be spread. RPM potentiometer may be set_to twice the blade rate in which case Tip Targets will be seen at twice as many positions around the rotor disc. For instance, targets of a two-blade rotor are typically seen at 12:00 and 6:00 o'clock (es determined by location of the Interrupters). if oscillator is set to double the blade rate, the targets will be seen at 12:00, 3:00, 6:00 and 9:00 o'clock. When the Strobex is set to Mode 8, light output is high (approximately four’ times that of Mode A). ©. Mode G. When MODE switch is set to C, the oscillator is free-running and Strobex is used as a tachometer for speed (rpm) measuring. All external signals are disconnected and the Strobex flashes only in response to its intemal oscillator. The flash rate is adjustable from 100 to 1,000 rom flashes-per-minute). Mode C provides a high-intensity light, as in Mode B. d. Mode 0. When MODE switch is set to D, the oscillator is free-running and Strobex is used for tail rotor tracking and speed measuring. Since there is no Magnetic Pickup mounted on tail rotor, the flashrate of free-running oscillator is adjusted to twice or four times the rotor rate (for a two blade tail rotor), so a single grip target appears as a stopped image of two ‘or four. Then, by viewing the rotor disc edge-on from the cabin door, the refiective Tip Targets can be seen superimposed for a judgement of track. Flash rate is from 1,000 to 10,000 rpm. Mode D provides a low-intensity light, as in Mode A. Manual No. 768-0075 CHADWICK-HELMUTH e. Mode E. When MODE switch is set to E, Strobex acts as a locking oscillator similar to Mode B, but operates at higher rates. This mode is used for viewing track of airplane propellers. It requires a Magnetic Pickup input pulse. Mode E provides a low-intensity light, as in Mode A. 43.2 Calibration of Strobex, a. Using Balancer and Calibrator, ‘Strobex is checked by observing that it flashes in response to Interrupters, when Balancer FUNCTION switch is set to TRACK, and Strobex MODE switch is set to A. b. Using Balancer and Calibrator, Strobex RPM potentiometer is checked in Mode C by stopping Calibrator strobe pattern and verifying that RPM dial indicates 450 and 900 rpm when Calibrator CAM RATE (RPM) switch is set to 900/923 and 1800/1714 ‘pm, respectively. 4.4, CONTROLS AND INDICATORS.
