The Belly Series (31/45 & 32/26)

Background of the Belly

Most Effective Power Play of Hy-bird Wishbone
Developed from Booby Dodd's inside Belly series that he ran at Georgia Tech (19451966)
Takes advantage of defenders between the guards (Tackles, Nose, ILB) who are keying
on Wedge.
Also takes advantage of defensive ends that soft play option or fire up field on Jet/Toss
Excellent short yardage play because it forces inside defenders to respect the FB
Gives a solid HB the ball with a lead blocker off-tackle

Quarterback
Steps for Belly are similar to the steps for 31/32 Wedge.
Open on a 45 angle and get the ball into the fullback's pocket exacly like 31/32 Wedge.
After the ball is in the fullback's pouch, the quarterback give a RIDE TO HIS FRONT
HIP(or gives to him on the fullback Belly)
Once the quarterback has meshed, hands the ball of as deep as he can to the backside
halfback, allowing the running back ample running room.
He then sprints around the end, setting up Belly Keep.

Fullback
Fullback should aim for the inside leg of the guard, just as he does in 31/32 Wedge.
Fullback should sell the dive by showing a large pocket to the defense before clamping
down over the ball.
Fullback knows when he is getting the ball before it is snapped, therefore he should
allow the QB to pull the ball cleanly from the mesh when he is not receiving it.
THE FULLBACK MUST ALWAYS DENT THE LINE OF SCRIMMAGE AT 100%
WHETHER HE HAS THE BALL OR NOT.

Play Side Halfback (Lead Blocker)

The lead blocker will help to determine the exact path of the play by READING THE
BLOCK OF THE PLAY SIDE TACKLE.
Once the PSHB has determined where he will go through the LOS, he must attack any
defender at full speed.
THIS BLOCK IS VITAL, BECAUSE IT MAY BE THE BLOCK TO SPRING THE PLAY.

Back Side Halfback (Potential Ball Carrier)

The back side halfback will take similar steps as he would on Cannon.
His aiming point should be at the inside leg of the TE.
His eyes fixed on the hole; watching where his lead blocker goes.
As he crosses the mesh point of the QB and FB, he should open his arms and prepare
for the hand-off.
After receiving the hand-off, he should follow his lead blocker and run to daylight
HE MUST GO NORTH AND SOUTH WITH HIS SHOULDERS PARALLEL TO THE LINE
OF SCRIMMAGE AND GAIN POSITIVE YARDS.
