Description of Valued Performance Project
The fifth grade students will create a biome after reviewing a unit on
ecosystems. This lesson will review their understanding of an ecosystem and
what plants and animals are found in them. This project will be completed
inside of a box that is provided by the teacher, but the students imagination

is key to succeeding in this project. They will have two weeks to complete
this assignment. It will be assessed by the included rubric.

Directions for Valued Performance or Product

You are going to decide which one of the five biomes that we have
discussed in class that you would like to create.
After choosing one of the five biome, choose one of the types of
classifications within the biome. (ex. Forest biome- tropical forest)
The front of the box will be cut out so your peers and teacher can look
at your biome. We will do this as a class.
On the back of the box (opposite side from the cut out) place the
biome name, your name, date, and decorate it.
On one of the side of the box, you must include a Food Web about the
animals that are located in your specific biome. Must include 7 plants and/or
animals at a minimum. The Food Web should take up of the side of the
box. Therefore, it should not be a small Food Web. Draw and label each
plant/animal you place into the diagram.
On the other side of the box, you must include the following in
complete sentences:

Annual rainfall

5 animals located in the biome

Temperature range

5 plants located in the biome

3 countries that the biome can be located at

After the outside of your box is created, make a biome using any
objects of your choice on the inside of the open box. You must include
the following:

At least 5 animals

At least 2 plants

Label the plants and animals used in the biome of the box
YOUR OWN CREATIVITY!

All illustrations need to be in color.

Check your spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.
You will have class time to research items for your project.
