ASSIGNED PROBLEMS #3

Solve the following problems from the third edition of your textbook:
Chapter 3: 3.29 (Note that the figure given in the question is not a proper flowchart. Draw and label a proper flowchart
and perform a DoF analysis. If DoF is equal to zero, then find the numerical quantities asked in the question.)
Chapter 4: 4.9, 4.16, 4.18a,b (do not forget to perform a DoF analysis in Problem 4.18)
Solve the additional questions below:
1. Wet fish cake (80% water, 20% dry cake) is dried in a rotary drum dryer. 100 kg water is evaporated from the wet
cake and the product cake contains 40% water. Draw and label a flowchart, perform a DoF analysis, and (if DoF = 0)
calculate the weight of fish cake initially put in the dryer. What kind of process is this?
2. (CAUTION: This is an easy chemical engineering question, but only after you understand the operation well. In order
to understand the operation, you have to understand the chemistry behind the concept of solubility, hence some of this
information will be given in the question). A tank holds 10000 kg of a saturated aqueous solution of Na2CO3 at 30 oC.
You want to crystallize this solution to obtain solid Na 2CO3. If you decrease the temperature of this saturated solution,
some of it will crystallize (recall Chem 101). However during crystallization you do not obtain pure Na 2CO3, but
Na2CO3.10H2O, which means that 1 mole of a solid crystal will contain 1 mole Na 2CO3 and 10 moles H2O. In this
process, temperature of the initial charge is decreased. As a result, 3000 kg of Na2CO3.10H2O is crystallized, while the
remaining solution is still in aqueous phase, and saturated at the new temperature (note that the initial composition has
changed). Given the following solubility data of Na 2CO3 in aqueous solution, determine the mass fraction of Na 2CO3 in
the final aqueous solution, and the final temperature of the system (you should interpolate the values in the data table).
HINT: Even before the DoF analysis, use the solubility data to determine the mass fractions in two different streams.

i.

Draw and label a flowchart of the process.

ii.

Perform a DoF analysis, even if it is not asked in the textbook question (I will always ask).

iii. Solve for the asked quantities in the question.
