TUTORIAL 5

1. The building slab is subjected to four parallel column loadings. Determine the
equivalent resultant force and specify its location (x, y) on the slab. Take F1=20 kN
and F2 =50 kN . (Ans.: F R=140 kN, x =6.43 m, y =7.29 m)

2. Replace the force and couple moment system acting on the overhang beam by a
resultant force, and specify its location along AB measured from point A.
(Ans.: F R=50.2 kN, =84.3 , d=4.79 m)

3. Wind has blown sand over a platform such that the intensity of the load can be
approximated by the function w=( 0.5 x 3 ) N /m . Simplify this distributed loading to an
equivalent resultant force and specify its magnitude and location measured from A.
(Ans.: F R=1.25 kN, x =8 m)

4. The distribution of soil loading on the bottom of a building slab is shown. Replace this
loading by an equivalent resultant force and specify its location, measured from point O.
(Ans.: F R=23.4 kN, d=3.38 m)

5. The beam is subjected to the distributed loading. Determine the length b of the uniform
load and its position a on the beam such that the resultant force and couple moment
acting on the beam are zero.

(Ans.: a=2.92 m, b=1.35 m)
