Period 1
Gregs Respect
In the story The Treasure of Lemon Brown, skeptical Greg shows gradual respect and
care toward Lemon Brown as he learns more and more about him. At first, he doesnt believe
Lemon that he actually has a treasure. On page 181, when Lemon asks him if he was after his
treasure: Im not looking for your treasure, Greg answered, smiling. If you have one. But
even after he says that, he doesnt just walk away or ignore him as Lemon Brown starts
introducing himself. Instead, he is listening to what he has to say. He also asks him,
What...what happened to you? (pg. 183), evidently concerned and worried. When the thugs
come into the house, Greg doesnt remain under cover and wait for them to leave, or think up of
ways to save himself. Seeing that Lemon Brown was in danger of the thugs, he helped him by
letting out a loud howl. Additionally, when Lemon Brown tells him to go home, Greg asks, You
sure youll be O.K.? (pg.186).This shows that Greg cares about Lemon Brown. He also tells
him to take care of his treasure. Compared to when they first encountered each other, Greg has
a deeper understanding of how meaningful and real the treasure was. Through these details,
the author shows Gregs change in attitude toward Lemon Brown.
