Observation week (Day 4 09/12/16) - Domain 3: Environment Day 4 Content 4

APS 9MANAGING THE CLASSROOM

On observation day 4, I really focused on the classroom environment. There are set
expectations for student behavior and for the most part, students lived up to those expectations.
That is not to say that all classes were perfect because they were far from that. As the day goes
along, student behavior becomes more and more irritable.
When they enter the classroom, students are expected to come in quiet and open their do
now journals and complete the Do Now. The first two periods, which are before lunch,
students follow directions nearly flawlessly. Toward the end of the period, they are somewhat
talkative, which is expected. When students begin to get off task, Mrs. Hailey stands before the
class and raises one hand. Students responded to this very well because when she did this, they
began to get back on task. At other times, she will say loudly, Ill wait. Students who know
what that means begin to help Mrs. Hailey but helping their class mates bring their tones to a
respectable level.
To maximize instruction time, Mrs. Hailey had several activities in line for students. As I
previously stated, students enter the classroom with the expectation to complete their do now.
Then, Mrs. Hailey started instruction on intensive and reflexive pronouns. After instruction on
how to recognize intensive and reflexive pronouns, students were given a practice test for
independent practice. These activities kept students busy for the most part which limited
behavioral issues.
Today in the last period after lunch, two students were completely off task, when Mrs. Hailey
spoke to them the first two times, their behavior did not change at all. By the end of the period,

those two students had been written up and sent to the principals office. This was somewhat of a
shocker to me because it doesnt seem too often that students get that far off task in this class due
to the fact that there is always instruction in place.
