Welcome
A very warm welcome to the CUMS 201314 season brochure,
which offers a rich array of over 40 concerts. There is great
variety from Tallis, Bach and Scarlatti to Elgar, Jancek and
Tippet. The breadth and quality of these concerts bears
testament to CUMS mission to bring a joy and love of music
to all. We hope that you will come to share and enjoy what we
offer.
Cambridges flagship orchestra, CUCO, will be tackling
some exciting repertoire, opening with Mozarts Clarinet
Concerto with soloist David Wong and Principal Guest
Conductor Peter Stark. Two further exciting ventures are
planned for the Orchestra this autumn. On November 16, it
will perform the original orchestral accompaniment to the
newly-restored 1924 silent film The Epic of Everest; it will go
on to record the soundtrack for the BFIs DVD release of the
film. In December, it will perform Christmas concerts under
the baton of Sir Roger Norrington in Cambridge and at Kings
Place in London.
As part of our Great Conductors Series we are privileged to
welcome back Nicholas Collon to direct CUCO, the CUMS
Symphony Orchestra and the choirs of Clare, Gonville and
Caius, Jesus and Selwyn Colleges in a performance of
Tippetts A Child of our Time in Kings College Chapel in
January. A recent CUMS conducting scholar, Nicholas is now
one of Britains most exciting young conductors: he won a
RPS award in 2011, was Assistant Conductor of the London
Philharmonic Orchestra until 2012, and is in demand with
leading orchestras around Europe and beyond. The Chapel
hosts two further concerts for CUMS Chorus: Mendelssohns
romantic masterpiece, Elijah, in November with the East
Anglian Chamber Orchestra, and Janceks vibrant and

dramatic Slavonic masterwork, Glagolitic Mass, in May Week

with the CUMS Symphony Orchestra.
The Symphony Orchestra opens the year with Mahlers
triumphant Symphony No.1 on November 2. It continues with
a Russian theme in December under Principal Conductor
Martin Yates. In March, the Orchestra promises a dramatic
rendition of Stravinskys Symphony in Three Movements
conducted by the fiery Venezuelan Carlos Izcaray: he
encouraged fierce, joyous playing (The Times).
The Concert Orchestra offers wonderful opportunities to
young soloists and conductors, with programmes of
Mendelssohn, Beethoven and Brahms. The Wind Orchestra
combines with the Percussion Ensemble in November for a
rousing programme of Copland and Bernstein, including an
arrangement of the West Side Story Suite. There is more to
enjoy as they join forces with the Concert Orchestra in May.
In complete contrast, the Chamber Choir will be joined by
the finest student period ensembles in May to bring us Tallis
Spem in Alium in their Echoes of Venice concert. There are
also a great variety of free Tuesday lunchtime concerts
showcasing the finest instrumentalists alongside Britten
Sinfonia, resident University Ensemble.
I am very excited about this superb season of concerts as I
take on the new role of Executive Director. Please support as
many concerts as you can, I am certain you will find much to
enjoy in the excellence and enthusiasm of these young people.
I hope to see you there and please dont hesitate to give us
feedback, good and bad! A final warm thanks to all who
support us: as donors, volunteers and mentors. We could not
manage without you.

Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra is

Cambridges flagship orchestra. It attracts the
Universitys very best musical talent, works exclusively
with distinguished professional conductors, and achieves
the highest possible standards. Recent highlights have
included Wagner with Sir Mark Elder, a recording of
Mozart and Haydn with Sir Roger Norrington and a live
Radio 3 broadcast with Kings College Chapel Choir
conducted by Stephen Cleobury.
CUMS Symphony Orchestra is the Universitys finest
symphony orchestra. It performs a wide range of
repertoire under its distinguished principal conductor
Martin Yates, its undergraduate conducting scholar, and
a roster of guest conductors which has recently included
Sir Roger Norrington, Sir Mark Elder, Sir Richard
Armstrong and Libor Pesek.
CUMS Chorus brings together singers from town and
gown, and performs at least three concerts a year, two in
Kings Chapel. The Chorus is directed by its principal
conductor Stephen Cleobury and occasional guest
conductors. Regular international tours are arranged for
the Chorus, the most recent having been to Paris in April
2012 and they will go to Lisbon in April 2014.
Directed by Martin Ennis and David Lowe, the
Cambridge University Chamber Choir provides the best
student singers with the opportunity to perform at the

highest possible level repertoire that is not usually

undertaken by the Cambridge chapel choirs. There is an
emphasis on secular music and on repertoire that offers
singers the chance to appear as soloists or in small groups.
CUMS Concert Orchestra, is our second symphony
orchestra. Since its establishment in 1921 the orchestra
has always offered an opportunity for the Universitys
best young student conductors and soloists and in the
past it has played under the baton of Sir David Willcocks,
Sir John Eliot Gardiner and Edward Higginbottom.
Cambridge University Wind Orchestra is an
ambitious wind ensemble, led by talented student
conductors, which performs repertoire ranging from wind
band classics to new works. Recent highlights have
included music by Bernstein, Dukas, Gershwin, Gorb,
Gregson, Holst, McNeff and John Williams.

Peter Ash conducts the Cambridge University Chamber Choir and Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra,
May 2013.

The Epic of Everest (J.B. Noel, 1924; compiled score from 1924 by
Frederick Laurence and Eugene Goossens Snr.)
This concert will involve a musical recreation of The Epic of Everest
(J. B. Noel), a travelogue-cum-quest adventure silent film shot on Mount
Everest in 1924 during that years Royal Geographical Society expedition,
the one on which George Mallory and Sandy Irvine died.
The film has recently been restored by the British Film Institute and is
to be shown in London with a newly commissioned score, however this is
the only planned screening with a live recreation of the original score
held in the Cambridge University Library. It is an example of a compiled
score for silent film, consisting of a number of excerpts from existing
classical works as well as a few specially composed themes.

Cambridge University Musical Society

CUMS is one of the oldest and most distinguished
university music societies in the world. It offers a worldclass musical education for members of the University
and local residents, nurturing the great musicians of the
future and providing performing opportunities for over
500 Cambridge musicians every year.
The Society has played a pivotal role in British musical
life for almost 170 years. It has educated such luminaries
as Sir Andrew Davis, Sir Mark Elder, Sir John Eliot
Gardiner, Edward Gardner, Christopher Hogwood and
Robin Ticciati, has given world or UK premiers of works
by Brahms, Holloway, Lutoslawski, Maxwell Davies,
Rutter, Saxton and Vaughan Williams, and has given
successive generations of Cambridge musicians the
experience of visiting conductors and soloists including
Britten, Dvorak, Kodaly, Menuhin and Tchaikovsky. Since
the 1870s, CUMS has enjoyed the leadership of several of
Britains finest musicians, including Sir Charles Villiers
Stanford, Sir David Willcocks, Sir Philip Ledger, and,
from 1983 to 2009, Stephen Cleobury.
In 2009 Stephen Cleobury assumed a new role as
Principal Conductor of the CUMS Chorus, and Sir Roger
Norrington was appointed as Principal Guest Conductor.
Martin Yates, one of the most exciting and versatile
British conductors of his generation in the words of The
Times, joined the team as Principal Conductor of the

CUMS Symphony Orchestra; and a Great Conductors

series was launched with the objective of exposing CUMS
members to a succession of world-class visiting
conductors. In February 2010 CUMS entered another new
phase of its development when it merged with the
Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra and
Cambridge University Music Club. In October 2010 the
Society launched the Cambridge University Lunchtime
Concerts a new series of weekly chamber recitals at
West Road Concert Hall showcasing the Universitys
finest musical talent. In 2011 it merged with the
Cambridge University Chamber Choir, which is directed
by Martin Ennis and David Lowe. CUMS continues to
provide opportunities for the Universitys finest student
soloists and conductors by awarding conducting
scholarships and concerto prizes, and it actively
encourages new music by running a composition
competition and premiring at least one new work each
year.
Recent highlights have included Wagners Parsifal (Act
III) conducted by Sir Mark Elder, a recording of Haydn
and Mozart symphonies with Sir Roger Norrington,
Elgars The Dream of Gerontius with Sir Richard
Armstrong, and a BBC Radio 3 broadcast with Kings
College Chapel Choir conducted by Stephen Cleobury.

Join the CUMS Supporters Circle

Since it was founded in 1843, CUMS has provided unique
opportunities for successive generations of Cambridge
musicians. It has immeasurably enriched the cultural life
of the University and City, and, having launched many of
the biggest careers in classical music, it has played a
pivotal role in the musical world beyond.
CUMS receives no core funding from the University,
and income from ticket sales does not meet the full cost
of delivering a world-class musical education. The CUMS
Supporters Circle has been established to address this
pressing financial need.
All those who value Cambridges splendid musical
heritage, and want to maintain it for the twenty-first
century, are invited to join the Circle. Membership is
through annual donation. There are seven levels of
donation:

Donor: 100249 per annum
