Tutorial # 10 Problems
Synchronous Machines DC Machines
1. A 4600 V, 8-pole, 1000 kVA synchronous motor has a synchronous reactance of 26 per
phase. Neglect all losses.
(a) The load torque is equal to 6 kNm and the motor supplies 300 kVA of reactive power
(leading power factor). Find the line current, load angle, and internal voltage. Draw the
vector diagram relating voltages and current.
(b) The load torque is reduced to 0 and the motor supplies 300 kVA of reactive power
(leading power factor). Find the line current, load angle, and internal voltage. Draw the
vector diagram relating voltages and current. Indicate the percent change in excitation
current compared to Question 2(a).
2. A 15 hp, 440 V, 1160 rpm separately excited dc motor has an armature resistance of 0.80
and field losses are equal to 620 W. The field current is kept constant. The rotational losses
are equal to 1750 W.
(a) For terminal voltage of 440 V and armature current of 31 A, the speed is 1160 rpm. Find
the internal voltage, electromagnetic power, shaft power, shaft torque, and efficiency.
(b) The terminal voltage is decreased to 200 V, and the current remains at 31 A. Find the
motor speed and electromagnetic torque. Draw the approximate torque-speed
characteristics for 440 V and 200 V.
3. A separately excited dc motor has the following characteristics:

induced voltage at 1800 rpm and rated field current: 230 V;

armature resistance: 0.20 ;

mechanical losses: 750 W at 1800 rpm and proportional to speed;

core losses at 1800 rpm: 500 W, proportional to the square of the speed.

The machine is not saturated.

(a) For a 120 V terminal voltage, the recorded armature current is 80 A. Find the motor
speed, the electromagnetic power and torque, and the shaft power and torque. Draw the
approximate speed/armature voltage curve, for an 80 A armature current, the voltage
varying from 0 to 230 V, indicating the speed at 0 V, 120 V, and 230 V.
(b) The machine is driven at 1750 rpm and supplies 80 A to a resistive load. Compute the
value of the load resistance and the power dissipated in this resistance. Find the shaft
power and torque.
