Last spring. my family was presented the “Adopted Alumni” Award from the tiniversity of
Colorado Law School for our efforts in building my son Dan's scholarship to help dedicated
students who share his interest in becoming a public defender, and carry on his legacy of public
service. It was a great honor for us, and we were joined by most of the scholarship winners in
accepting the award. As much as Dan's scholarship has been a gift to these students in providing
financial support to ease their path in becoming public defenders, it's also been a meaningful gift
to our family. We've connected with the recipients, watched as they've flourished in their careers,
and have heard how the scholarship has made a difference in allowing them to become and remain
public defenders.
This year, we've selected two outstanding candidates who will receive $24,000 each, and will be a
great addition to the Dan Barash Scholarship community in continuing his life’s work: Erika Kuhl
and Chanel Sochacki. Erika spoke of how she’s worked to advocate for her clients and gain their
trust, as well as the excitement in winning her first trial. Chanel related to Dan’s experience
changing career paths in law school to become a public defender. She also drew parallels between
the tradition of scholarship recipients “paying it forward” and her support of others through her
own clinical work.
‘Since 2004, we've raised over $1 million from 2,100 donors, and have awarded $300,000 to 23
worthy recipients in Dan’s beloved memory. We've stayed committed to furthering Dan's
scholarship because we hope to reach the goal of full tuition support for two students each year
who share Dan’s passion for defending the indigent. Every contribution matters, and we are so
grateful for the continued generosity of our many family and friends. We hope we can count on
‘your support again this year.
With warm regards,

“Lam so grateful and honored to be a recipient of this scholarship, which will
allow me to pursue a career as a public defender and follow in the footsteps of
Dan. While the lite of a public defender is not easy, they are some of the most
passionate, generous, and hardworking people | have ever met. | believe all
people deserve to have a voice in the criminal justice system, and have their
‘side of the story told, regardless of their means. | am looking forward to being
that voice for people, fighting for their rights, and continuing Dan's legacy.”

“Like Dan, | originally wanted to be a prosecutor. Participating in the Criminal
Defense Clinic during my second year of law school, however, completely
‘changed my understanding of the criminal justice system and the problems
that inhere within it. After my first cient meeting, | knew that I needed to dedi-
cate my career to helping individuals who could not afford defense represen-
tation. This past summer, | worked on unjust conviction and civil rights cases;
researching and writing with the goal of correcting the wrongful convictions of
innocent people further motivated me to continue with my ambition to work at
a public defender's office.
1am beyond grateful to be a Dan Barash ‘Scholarship recipient because it
will considerably ease the post-grad financial burden of law school. | ‘hope to
carry on Dan's legacy, compassion, and dedication to the cause through direct
representation.”COLORADO Dan Barash Scholarship Fund

2016 Dan Barash Scholarship Awardees
Our son and brother, Dan, found his life's calling
in providing legal representation to those less
fortunate as a student at the University of Colorado
Law School. After graduation in 2002, Dan worked
for the Office of the Public Defender in Colorado
Springs. He enjoyed matching wits in the courtroom,
and.even eamad :pmieiaee's “Cousin Vinny. Award”
(named for the movie) tor being the public defender
who was able to garner a not guilty verdict facing
the most insurmountable of odds. Dan was a caring,
funny, and a trusted friend who loved hiking, skiing,
and playing golf. He was particularly proud of having
climbed to the 14,000-foot summit of Pikes Peak.
After Dan passed away from complications of
Crohn's disease at age 30 in 2004, our family
wanted to bring about positive change from our loss.
We started Dan's scholarship to mobilize bright and
energetic students who share Dan's commitment
in representing the indigent. It has since grown
into one of premier scholarships at Colorado Law,
changing the lives of students by significantly
lowering their debt load. We have enjoyed getting
to know the awardees, who carry on Dan's legacy.
Recipients have championed his cause by creating
community of Barash scholars and mentoring
recent awardees, thereby “paying it forward” for
future recipients.
Working on Dan's scholarship, including the annual
appeal, has been a labor of love for our family. We
are deeply thankful for the continued support from
so many friends and family, whose generosity has
ensured Dan's memory and the impact of his life will
live on in perpetuity.
